Shallowater star next Wes Welker

Shallowater, Texas, is about 6 minutes from the airport in Lubbock, Texas, but it’s still miles away from the beaten path when it comes to recruiting.
So it’s not surprise to see that Eric Morris, a 5-foot-9, 171-pound athlete has gone virtually under the recruiting radar screen.

But for teams like SMU, Texas Tech and Texas A&M, the all-South Plains most valuable player has become a sleeper recruit.
Morris, who has a 4.47-second time in the 40-yard dash, is currently on an official visit to Texas Tech. He then goes to SMU on January 23 and then Texas A&M on January 30. He’s yet to earn an official scholarship offer, but the more teams find out about him the more they like him.
“Texas Tech told me that I’m just like Wes Welker,” he said. “I like to believe that I’m the best kept secret in the state of Texas. I think my size and being at a small 2A school made me be overlooked. I honestly think I can play and produce something special on the Division I level.
“Most coaches say they can see me definitely returning kickoffs and on punt returns and I think that’s my best assets. I also think I could be used as an inside slot receiver.”
Morris admits he grew up a fan of Texas Tech, but he’s also excited about A&M and SMU’s interest.
“Texas Tech has always been my front-runner to begin with,” he said. “It is right here and my dad went to Tech. I’ve been watching their games since I was 2 years old. I would really fit into their offense. I see 5-9, 5-10 guys catching a lot of balls in their offense.”
But the Ponies and Aggies are also in the hunt.
“SMU and Texas A&M sure seem like the two that are going to offer,” he said. “Coach Thurmond was here on Thursday and he told me that my stock has gone up 900 percent the last few weeks. I also really like what they’re doing at SMU. They think I could come in there and play almost right away.”
