Shabazz Dotson sets the table for spring following Longhorns visit

The Forty Acres has been good to Cedar Hill defensive lineman Shabazz Dotson in recent memory.

Last summer, he was arguably the most impressive defensive lineman at the LonghornsUnder the Lights event and he was back on campus last weekend for Texas’ recent junior day event. Despite the good memories the last couple of times out, Dotson is still waiting for his offer from Texas, but that didn’t take away from his experience on Saturday afternoon.

“Overall, it was a great visit, it was fun,” he said. “I got to learn a lot of stuff. The coolest thing from the visit was the towers in the school where you can see city hall from and the capitol. I like the environment and I’m picking my school off the environment - where I know I can be safe and have fun, play football and get an education.”

He didn’t have confirmed plans to be at Kansas State this weekend, but while in Austin, that was the tentative plan. Also on the agenda is finding some time to go have a look at Houston, as the Cougars staff has been working to build some momentum with its new staff completely sorted.

IN HIS WORDS

On Kansas State

“I’m planning on going out there next week,” he said. “I’ve been talking with them a little bit, but I’m really looking forward to getting out there and talking to them in person. I’ve been talking with Coach (Charlie) Dickey, who’s the offensive line coach so that’s a little weird. We didn’t get a chance to talk much when he offered because I was in class, but we’re just taking it from there.”

On Houston

“Coach (A.J.) Blum is a pretty cool dude,” he said. “He’s coached a lot of D-I Talent, so he’s a pretty good coach on my list because of his track record, and I feel like he can get me to where I need to be. I like the direction things are going out there - they’re bubbling up.”

RIVALS REACTION

Dotson is a bit of a tweener as a defensive tackle or end, but he’s proven he has many of the elements desired in a pass-rushing down lineman.

After opening up his recruitment with a splash-offer from Michigan, things leveled off pretty quickly with some more regional teams filling out his offer list. This spring could give his recruitment a second wind, and if he has another successful camp season, should enjoy receiving some more offers to go along with invites for campus visits.
