Semper Fi: Ranking college teams by commitments' performances

CARSON, Calif. – Several college programs had multiple prospects in the Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl and, following the game, a few fan bases have reason for optimism following some standout performances. Rivals.com ranked the college programs by how their committed players performed in the game Sunday at the StubHub Center.

1. Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Four-star defensive end Khalid Kareem took home MVP honors after recovering two fumbles, one of which he took the other way for a touchdown. He was terrific in reading zone-read handoffs all week and it paid off in the game as Kareem pressured the backfield throughout. Future teammate Jamir Jones jumped a route over the middle for an interception that basically wrapped up the contest.

2. Penn State Nittany Lions

At 6-foot-6, 210 pounds, three-star outside linebacker Cameron Brown certainly looked the part and he backed it up on the field, finding himself near the football on what seemed like every play. He has long arms that allow him to track down ballcarriers, but he also makes it very difficult for receivers while in coverage. Zechariah McPhearson was solid covering receivers on the edge, but his highlight came on special teams when he returned a missed field goal about 105 yards to set up the first score. Tight end Danny Dalton proved his worth as a run blocker and Andrew Pryts had his name called a couple times in the secondary.

3. LSU Tigers

Caleb Roddy, who last week told Rivals.com that Tennessee and Texas have not stopped recruiting him, might draw more phone calls after his performance Sunday. The three-star defensive end was difficult for the West linemen to block and he put constant pressure on the quarterbacks. Tight end Jamal Pettigrew, meanwhile, didn’t get any opportunities in the passing game but was integral as a run blocker. He might have been the most ready prospect physically on his team.

4. UCLA Bruins

Theo Howard

Before moving into his dorm in Westwood, four-star receiver Theo Howard had one more high school game to play and he made it count. The Rivals100 member had a diving touchdown catch where he kept his feet inbounds while sprawling for a ball, and he also showed what he is capable of in open space, making several defenders look silly trying to bring him down one-on-one. Osa Odighizuwa had a big sack where he beat his lineman inside, and Michael Alves opened some big holes as a run blocker, particularly when he pulled from the guard spot.

5. Oregon Ducks

Three-star Terry Wilson got the start at quarterback for the West and certainly earned it given how impressive he was in practice all week. There were some issues with snaps in the game, but Wilson still managed to scramble his way to open space while keeping his eyes downfield. Though he is known as a terrific runner, Wilson showed that he could also be a passing threat at the next level, putting nice touch on several long throws. Logan Bathke had a good night at right tackle and Jared Mayden broke up a couple passes at cornerback.

6. Oklahoma Sooners

Jon-Michael Terry might have been the most aggressive linebacker for the West throughout the week and he was at it again Sunday, showing an ability to rush the passer from the outside but also faring well in coverage. He didn’t back down from blockers and did well to get to the football. Cornerback Parrish Cobb was smooth in his backpedal and read quarterbacks well, while Austin Kendall showed good command running the East offense.
