There are quite a few players on the Oaks Christian team that grab headlines, but one player that somewhat gets overlooked and flies a little bit under the radar is four-star cornerback Anthony Gildon. But the 6-foot-1, 187-pounder is still without question one of the best defensive backs in the nation and that's why he's been selected to play in the Offense-Defense All-American Bowl.
"When I got word, I was really excited about the game," Gildon, who is also one of the top 250 players in the nation, said. "Then when I found out there were other players from Oaks Christian (Marshall Jones and Casey Matthews) going, I knew for sure that I was going to be in. It's a really big honor to be considered for this type of game, and when I found out more about, I knew for sure that it was something I wanted to be part of.
"I'm really excited and honored to be invited."
Gildon, who is 5-foot-11 and 185 pounds, is excited about getting another opportunity to show the nation how talented he is. The game that will be carried live on ESPNU will be his third game this season on national television.
"People are going to see the type of cornerback that can play man and zone and come up and make a lot of big tackles," Gildon said. "The college coaches I talk to say I'm a complete corner, and that's really flattering. I just go out there and work hard and try to do my best. I hope I can do the same in the All-American Bowl."
Gildon said he's also excited about heading to Florida. The game will be in Fort Lauderdale and that last time he went to Florida was for a trip to Orlando almost 10 years ago.
"One thing for sure, I know the weather is going to be nice," Gildon said. "The other thing I'm most excited about is going to visit the children's hospital. I can't wait to help give the sick kids something to smile and be excited about. That's really one of the biggest things I'm looking forward to."
Gildon is an Oregon commitment, and he said his decision to pledge to the Ducks back in June was a tough one. But he said he just felt like Eugene was the right place for him.
"I was up there two times previously before I had committed," Gildon said. "And I knew the first time that it was the place for me. I fell in love with the place the first time I saw it. I also saw how the coaches coach everything, and I felt like they would get me in the best position to succeed in college and after college. I'm still excited about my decision. It was a tough pick at first, but it was the right pick for me."
Others announced today:
