Monticello (Fla.) Jefferson County defensive end Denzel Whitfield landed his first and only offer back during the spring. It came from a member of the SEC.
"Kentucky has offered me," Whitfield said. "They are my only offer so far. They offered me back in May during spring practice."
Since the Wildcats extended an offer, Whitfield says he has stayed in regular contact with his primary recruiter.
"Really, I have just been talking to Coach (Mike) Summers," Whitfield said. "We talk on Facebook. He just checks to see how I am doing. He asks about practice and commends me on going out and having good practices, being a leader for my team, and things like that."
The 6-foot-5, 240-pound defensive end is hoping to visit Lexington in the coming weeks.
"I haven't yet," Whitfield said. "I plan to go visit soon, but I don't know exactly when, but they will be one of my officials."
While Kentucky is the only school to offer, Whitfield believes that he will soon have company on his offer list.
"I think Syracuse is very close to offering me a scholarship," Whitfield said. "I talk to the defensive line coach there a lot."
Whitfield said he was also hearing a lot from South Florida, but since missing their summer camps their interest has dwindled.
With regards to a decision, he is working with a soft timeline.
"I want to decide by my birthday," Whitfield said. "So that would be sometime around October."
As a junior, Whitfield recorded 65 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, and eight sacks.
