Hours after returning from his official visit with Indiana, Cincinnati (Ohio) Colerain linebacker Tegray Scales called back to Bloomington to let the coaching staff know he was ready to be a Hoosier.
In the last few weeks, Scales had zeroed in on Indiana and Minnesota as his top contenders. He had scheduled an official visit to Minnesota for next weekend, but decided to forego that trip after returning from Bloomington on Sunday.
"I thought about it and told the Minnesota coaches I wouldn't make it out," Scales said. "I called back to Indiana and talked to Coach [Kevin] Wilson and Coach [William] Inge and told them I wasn't going [and] I verbally committed to Indiana.
"I called Coach Inge first and he said to call Coach Wilson. He was really excited and once I told him all the coaches started cheering. He said he's thrilled."
Scales made the two-hour drive from his Cincinnati home to Bloomington frequently over the last few months, and it was evident Indiana was building strong momentum in his recruitment.
"Once I started liking them they were keeping in touch daily," Scales said. "The coach would come to see me and I knew that's where I wanted to be. I knew for a while, I just never committed early. I wanted to get at least a visit before I did and [this weekend] kind of sealed it."
Indiana is looking to bring the 6-foot, 206-pound Scales in as a weakside linebacker, and he plans to start preparing for his future as a Hoosier as soon as his wrestling season concludes.
"After wrestling I am going to start getting my weight back up," Scales said. "Marcus [Oliver] said he is going to work with me on the playbook, so I should learn that pretty fast. I should be ready once I get my weight back up."
Scales lamented not being able to take the official visit to Minnesota next weekend, but is relieved to have the recruiting process behind him.
"This was draining me and I wanted to get it over with," he said. "I know one more [visit] wouldn't hurt, but I felt this was where I wanted to go."
