Sanders Close to Deciding

Carson (Calif.) safety Chet Sanders took his official visit to Washington last weekend and is as close to making his decision as possible. Later tonight, Husky head coach Keith Gilbertson and assistant coach Cornell Jackson will be coming in for a home visit and according to former Carson assistant coach Derek Collins, who has been handling Sanders' recruitment, the safety will make it official at that time.
"Yeah, it's a done deal, Chet is just waiting to do it tonight when the coaches come in," Collins said. "I'll be there with him too, just to make sure everything is all good and to make sure all of our last minute questions are answered but Chet is excited about being a Husky and I'm excited for him too. When Chet tore up his knee earlier in the year, Coach Jackson was the only coach who still kept on him.

"Once Chet came back and starting balling, all of a sudden, a lot of other schools started to come in to the picture. We finished the season 9-0 once Chet came back, we didn't lose a game. He was kind of the center piece to our defense and controlled everything from his safety position. I know no one believed we could beat Dorsey in the semi-finals and definitely not Venice in the finals but we all believed and Chet was a big part of that."
Sanders, 6-1, 180 pounds is one of the top safety prospects in the West region. Despite missing the first five games of the year, he was still named 1st team All-Area and 3rd team All-State. He's a play making safety who flies to the football and is a punishing tackler.
"That trip to Washington really opened his eyes," Collins said. "He loved the people there, the city and was just really comfortable with the coaches and his opportunity to play. Chet can play strong or free and I know Washington really likes how smart he is and feels he'll be able to step in and play because right away because of his great feel for the game."
We'll have more news on Sanders later tonight following his home visit to see if he indeed announces for the Huskies.
