S.C. safety shows cornerback cover skills
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – At the UNC Nike Camp in Chapel Hill, several wide receivers stood out among the crowd and one of the few defensive backs that was able to lock down the receivers was D.J. Swearinger out of Greenwood, S.C.
Swearinger is being recruited as a safety but he had the cover skills of a cornerback when he was competing in the one-on-ones at UNC.

"It was a nice experience," Swearinger said of the camp. "We came out here and did a lot of drills. I did alright. I kept up with all the receivers and broke up a lot of passes. About two people caught it on me."
Currently, Swearinger holds six offers, consisting of Auburn, Vanderbilt, Illinois, NC State, Duke and Maryland. One of the six really sticks out to the 6-foot-0, 195-pounder.
"Auburn stands out," he said. "They're in the SEC. They've got a good defense just about every year. I just think it would be a nice place to play."
Despite his interest in Auburn, Swearinger plans on taking his official visits before making any decisions. He also has a couple of other schools that he hopes and expects to hear from.
"Penn State's secondary coach, he told me I'd definitely get an offer, they just need time to get their recruiting right," he said. "I talked to the coach at Tennessee and he said I'd probably get an offer soon."
The interest from Tennessee is exciting for the long-time Volunteer fan.
"I grew up loving Tennessee," he said. "I like Penn State too. I talked to the coach and I've got a good relationship with him. I probably liked Tennessee just because of the colors being a little kid."
Swearinger hopes to get to Tennessee on June 11 for a visit but beyond that, he just hopes to help prepare his team for a state championship run.
