Rocks future may be on defense

Minneapolis (Minn.) Wayzata's Fritz Rock was looking like one of the top wide receivers in the Midwest for the 2009 class after his tour of summer camps prior to his junior season. In the past year, though, the 6-0, 205-pound Rock has filled out and shown potential on the defensive side of the football as well.
"I only went to two individual camps (this past summer) – one was Boston College and one was Wisconsin," Rock said. "They both projected me on the defensive side because I am 205 right now and they said once they put a Division 1 weight program on me and bulk me up I'll be to 220 or 225. They said I'd be a prototypical safety or probably a Will 'backer."

When Rock attended the U.S. Army Junior Combine in San Antonio, Texas last January he earned honorable mention all-defense honors. He is open to playing defense, but does not have much tape to show college coaches because he has been limited strictly to offense this fall for Wayzata.
"Individually my numbers haven't been the greatest. This past summer I injured my groin and the biggest thing is me trying to get back right now, but game by game I am improving," Rock reported. "They are moving me around to the slot receiver and sometimes I play outside receiver as well."
Rock is disappointed he is not playing defense, but with Wayzata off to a 7-0 start to the season he is not complaining. Offensively he has recorded 13 catches for 131 yards and one touchdown.
Prior to this fall Rock had accumulated offers from the likes of Cincinnati, Indiana, Washington State, Northern Illinois and Western Michigan. Several more schools are showing attention.
"A lot of them are waiting for my senior season film," Rock said. "We have a game this Wednesday and what I'm going to do is send out my senior film after this Wednesday's game."
Among the schools waiting for senior film from Rock are Illinois, Purdue, Utah, Penn State, Boise State, Fresno State, Rutgers and Connecticut. Rock will wait to make decisions about favorites until he sees who offers following the fall.
"Honestly, right now I am open," he said. "I did an unofficial visit to Minnesota. Who knows where I am going to go next, but right now I am going to do all unofficials and after the season I'll do official visits. I want to make a decision before Signing Day for sure."
