Rivals250 WR Dylan Wright breaks down his commitment to Aggies

When it came to Rivals250 wide receiver Dylan Wright’s commitment to Texas A&M, the decision itself wasn’t nearly as shocking as the timing of it.

After months of suggesting that he was content to wait until his appearance in the Under Armour All-American Game to announce his commitment, Wright chose to change course and commit on Monday night to the Aggies. In the tweet featuring his announcement video, he made mention of the fact his move to release it was, in part, triggered by the recent passing of Dallas-area rapper C Struggs.

“I always used to listen to his music, I used to see him around town in Ennis, and he reminded me a lot of myself because he came up from nothing too,” he said. “Everyone used to laugh at him and doubted him because he was a bigger guy, but when he passed I felt like I had to do something big for him ... I know that he came to a few of my games and I always looked to see where he was at.”

As for the decision to commit to A&M, Wright said that with the 2019 class rapidly filling, the time was right to secure his place within it. However, he was less concerned about saving a spot and more ready to join a group of friends that had already committed to the Aggies.

“What makes it even better is that all the people that are committed there are guys that I’ve played pee wee football with,” he said. “Demani [Richardson], Scooby [Jeffery Carter], just a lot of people that I know are going there and when we get together, it’s like a brotherhood.

"When I committed yesterday, it got pretty crazy because I know some coaches at other schools were surprised but my granny and my momma were happy for me so I knew I did the right thing.”

Little doubt remained that Wright's choice had ultimately been narrowed down to A&M and Texas. He noted that Longhorns assistant Jason Washington is actually a relative of his, but when it came down to it, the A&M coaching staff was the one that made him feel more like he was part of a family.

“When I visited out there, Coach Jimbo Fisher talked to my mom and told her ‘I’m going to take care of your baby like you would take care of him,’” he said. “Coach (Dameyune) Craig will sit you down, show you how to read defenses and I know that he’ll have me running the whole route tree, not just man me up against someone and run me deep. When it comes time for me to go to the NFL, I need to show them that I can run everything and I know he can get me there.

“(Craig) already acts like he’s in my family. He’s one of those coaches that are going to coach you hard but love you at the end of the day.”

Wright became the fourth wide receiver commitment in the Aggies 2019 class and said that he’s already tight with fellow fellow Rivals250 prospect Kam Brown, four-star Georgia import Kenyon Jackson and dynamic Houston slot receiver Chase Lane. He said that their relationship is as much about how well the group gets along with each other as it is how much they all expect to push themselves once they’re all decked-out in maroon and white.

“We all chill together,” he said. “We’re all in Snapchat groups together and we already have a bond. I feel like from the first day of practice we’re all going to come in and take over. Nobody is big-headed and everyone is willing to go to practice and work - and we’re going to win a championship.

“Our work ethic is going to be there and I know I can influence other people with my work ethic … all of these guys are top guys but that’s why we’re all ready to go get it.”

Wright doesn’t know how early to expect significant playing time, but said that once he finds a role for himself within the offense, he’s determined to hold on to it tightly. Now, just as he spoke of the importance of the connection to C Struggs and where they each came from, he's looking forward to the day when others will think of him in a similar fashion.

“I know once I get on the field I’m not about to let someone just come and be in my spot," he said. "I know I am going to bust my tail to be the top dog. I want people to be saying ‘I just went to school with him last year and look at him now.’ I want to put on for my city and my neighborhood.”
