Rivals250 safety Smith talks offers

River Ridge (La.) John Curtis safety P.J. Smith, a Rivals250 to watch member for the class of 2008, has ushered in plenty of early recruiting interest.
At 6-foot-4, 185 pounds, armed with athleticism, Smith is considered a top safety prospect. However, he says that he also could see himself at the receiver position. While working through several events in the track season, Smith says he's also picked up his first two scholarship offers.

"Alabama and Tulane," Smith said about who had offered him. "That's all I know about right now. Arizona State has talked about it, but I don't know if they've actually sent one yet. I haven't really been looking at offers because I've been doing track and all that."
Smith says that he doesn't have a favorite school in terms of recruiting yet. However, he's planning to head to Alabama this week with teammate Robby Green. He also wants to get out to Miami at some point, but doesn't know when that may happen.
"Miami has been my favorite school since I knew what football was," Smith said. "I don't know, but I may try to visit there soon. They're just really high up there with me right now. I know they're supposed to come in the spring to check me out."
As a safety, Smith says making contact is what he loves to do the most.
"I just love to hit and make the big play in the open field," he said. "If you throw it deep, I'm going to go after it. But if I don't get to the ball, I'm going to try and lay a hit on them. Tackling is my main thing."
Smith says that if at all possible, he'd love to try and play both offense and defense in college. However, if he had to pick just one, he says that he prefers to be on the defensive side of the ball.
When it comes to making a decision, he says he'll be looking for several things.
"It's really about both academics and playing time," he said. "The chance to get in there and start right away would be great."
