Rivals250 defensive tackle Rolando Melancon is working hard in the classroom this summer and also training hard for the forthcoming season.
The 6-foot-2, 260-pounder from Lutcher (La.) has more than 10 scholarship offers and has four schools at the top of his list.
"I have Michigan, Tennessee, Arkansas and LSU," Melancon said. "I open right now, but I am kind of favoring Michigan. I like their roster. They aren't all that deep at my position and I could come in and play right away.
"My recruiting coach Fred Jackson has been talking to the defensive line coach about me and tells me they would do some different things with me, like line me up over the center or move me out to end. I think I would like that."
The in-state LSU Tigers, who once were out in front, are still strong.
"LSU is stacked," Melancon said. "I'm still liking them. I just like what coach Jackson from Michigan said about playing early."
Tennessee is in the mix because of Rivals.com top 25 recruiter (2005) Trooper Taylor.
"Coach Taylor knew more than I thought he did," Melancon said. "When I was in eighth grade, he was a coach at Tulane and recruited one of my teammates, so he's been watching me. He said he couldn't wait to come back and recruit me later."
Arkansas sent a recruiter down to check on Melancon during the May evaluation period.
"They coach came down during spring practice," he said. "He said he liked me and how I ran around. He said he couldn't wait to get me up there.
"I like the way they play. I may visit the weekend they play USC (Sept. 2)."
Melancon has been in summer school working on his academics. He recently took the ACT and received a score of 17.
"That was good," he said. "I have a little academic work to do, but I've been talking to my counselors. If I finish strong in summer school, I'll be where I need to be."
Being in summer school leaves little time for Melancon to camp. He did say, however, he may try and make it to one school.
"I may be open for one camp," he said. "I'm going to try to make it up to Mississippi State."
Melancon had 75 tackles (16 for loss) and three sacks in 2005.
