There have been a lot of signs in Class of 2020 Rivals250 defensive end Tyler Baron's recruitment to point that he will end up playing his college football close to home at nearby Tennessee. First of all, his father, Patrick Abernathy, has been an assistant at Tennessee for a handful of years, and second, Baron recently moved from Nashville to Knoxville for his senior season. But while the FutureCast picks are flowing for Baron to stay close to home and join his dad in orange, he continues to say he's not close to a decision and taking his time to even set summer visits. Rivals.com recently caught up with Baron following the release of his Top 10 to talk recruiting as well as get his thoughts on the Vols and his upcoming visit to Ohio State.
IN HIS WORDS
"I just put out my Top 11 today -- Oklahoma, Tennessee, Florida, Ohio State, LSU, Alabama, Georgia Tech, Texas A&M, Oregon, Virginia Tech and Auburn -- hopefully I will cut it down to five or three by the end of the summer and then go from there. I don't really have any standouts right now because I really haven't put much thought into picking which school but everybody is really showing me a lot of love."
Tennessee: "Tennessee is showing me a lot of love of course, because I'm right down the street and see them a lot.I know my dad works at Tennessee but I'm still trying to find the right school for me regardless of what they say. Whether it's Tennessee or not. Because he's my father we have a good relationship, but it really doesn't have that big of an impact on my decision. We'll be up there a lot for visits this summer for sure. They want me to come in and be a Day 1 type player and play on the edge and get after the quarterback."
On if 2019 performance will impact his decision: "I'm not looking at wins and loses necessarily but I want to see them going in a positive direction and see fi the players are buying into Coach Pruitt's methods. That will have a big impact on my decision."
Ohio State: "I'll be going back up there for a visit next month, on June 21, just to get back and see campus. It's a good opportunity to go out there and hang out with the coaching staff and keep building that relationship. I went up there for a visit and March and ever since then they have been in touch pretty much every day. From Coach Johnson to Coach Alford and really Coach Day, they've all been involved. They have a few guys from Tennessee up there already and I don't know those guys super well but I see why they're going up there."
Fit in the Buckeyes defense: "Coach Johnson was just telling me that I could play the five-technique and make plays for them. They were really impressed with how I run and they think my speed and my athleticism would fit well in their defense."
Other visits: "I may be taking some more this summer but I'm not sure yet. Hopefully I get those figured out this week."
