Recommitments are rare in the world of college football recruiting but Virginia Tech managed to reel Rivals250 defensive end TyJuan Garbutt back into the fold Friday. The Fredericksburg (Va.) Riverbend star committed to the Hokies in February of last year but decommitted in July.

IN HIS OWN WORDS...

"I chose the Hokies about a year ago because I saw a bright future with coach (Justin) Fuente after what he did at Memphis and at TCU," Garbutt said. "Coach (Bud) Foster is still going to be there and he's one of the best defensive coordinators in the country. Coach (Charley) Wiles will be my position coach and he's been there for so long and coached so many great players. They're on the rise in the ACC.

"When I committed there last year we had a good class and then I decommitted in the summer because I wanted to take some visits," he said. "The Hokies were still my leader after that and I was still watching what they were doing on the recruiting trail because that was the team I wanted to play for. That's always been my home.

"The commitments they've been getting, it just shows how good coach Fuente's first season was," said Garbutt. "You've got the best players in the state staying in Virginia. It shows that the 10-win season is a signal that Virginia Tech is heading back to higher ranks. Them coming back in the bowl game just shows the type of coaching that's being done there. The best is yet to come.

"The first year I want to come in and contribute any way I can," he said. "If coach wants me to play here or there or special teams, I'm down for it. I'm out there to try to win games, win the ACC Championship. That's always one of the goals at Virginia Tech. I'm trying to go to the playoffs. I just want to help, contribute to the team and bring what I can bring."

RIVALS' REACTION

Virginia Tech is closing out the 2017 recruiting cycle in a big way. Garbutt rejoining Virginia Tech's class wasn't a surprise, but it is important. He brings a lot of versatility to the defense and the coaching staff will be able to develop him into a big time player.
