Rivals250 DB Jamal Morris gives Sooners huge commitment

Oklahoma started Friday afternoon grabbing headlines with the commitments of two five-star receivers, but the Sooners weren’t done there.

Rivals250 safety Jamal Morris also chose to make his announcement to commit to Oklahoma on what has become a tremendous recruiting weekend surrounding the OU spring game on Saturday. While it might not be a major surprise that Morris ultimately committed to Oklahoma, it wasn’t long ago that it seemed as though he may wait until after a previously scheduled official visit to Texas in early May to make his decision.

“I had in my mind that I was kind of set on committing this weekend,” Morris said. “As things started going along, and I thought more about my closeness with the coaches and the other players, it was really a no-brainer.”

Morris said that he is now choosing to forego that official to Texas, but as of now the plan is still to sign in February rather than December.

In addition to the job the Sooners staff had done in recruiting him, it was his personal connection to 2018 signee and fellow defensive back Starrland Baldwin that helped sell him on a future in Norman.

“Me and Starrland had been close going back to when we were playing on the same 7-on-7 team,” Morris said. “As soon as he saw that Oklahoma had offered me, he started recruiting me immediately and said that with me and him, we could really come make something happen together.”

Morris said that he had considered announcing on Friday evening, but as the commitments started coming in early and often, he said that he couldn’t wait to make his known. The Sooners started the afternoon with commitment announcements from Theo Wease and Arjei Henderson.

With a whole weekend ahead of him on his official visit, he said that he already has been loving the taste he’s received of his future both on and off the field.

“I think there is a lot more opportunity for me here, personally, and I think I fit in with their defense and with the defensive backs they have there now,” he said. “It’s just been crazy out here (on his visit), just the people showing me love, the city is beautiful, everything has been great.”
