Rivals250 CB Jaylon Guilbeau flips to Texas
One of the Longhorns' first verbal commitments in the 2022 class is back where it all began.
Rivals250 defensive back Jaylon Guilbeau, who originally committed to Texas under previous head coach Tom Herman, has flipped from TCU back to the Horns. The four-star defensive back that can also slide in and play in the nickel, is a top-20 cornerback in the country and a top-25 player in-state for Steve Sarkisian.
Guilbeau backed off his earlier commitment to Texas a few months after Sark's staff took over as conference rival TCU dialed up its pursuit of one of the best in the Golden Triangle. The 6-foot, 175-pounder faded on the Horned Frogs months later after longtime coach Gary Patterson was dismissed from his post.
The addition to Guilbeau will bolster Texas' 2022 class, which entered the weekend tabbed as No. 6 in the nation. Guilbeau is the fourth defensive back in the fold and the highest-ranked of the bunch along with fellow in-state four-stars Austin Jordan and Bryan Allen Jr. and three-star Louisiana safety Ronald Lewis.
The Longhorns are still in pursuit of the some of the nation's best defenders, namely five-star Galena Park (Texas) North Shore cornerback Denver Harris.
IN HIS OWN WORDS
On the most important coach: "Coach (Terry) Joseph. I like how Coach Terry recruited me hard throughout this process and broke down my tape and showed me different things I did right and wrong all together .. Coach Terry is a great coach."
On picking Texas: " The reason I picked Texas is because I can see myself playing there and I know that I have to come in and work for what I want in order to be that guy! It feels great!!"
On how the Longhorns flipped him: "Because it’s Texas -- and I feel like the coaching staff is going to do a great job with they players.. I have to come out and play ball."
RIVALS REACTION
A bonafide cover corner, Guilbeau brings a ton of versatility to the Longhorns' secondary. The 6-foot, 175-pounder is well-built with an impressive 22.56-second time in the 200-meter this past spring.
Guilbeau has go stride for stride with receivers and is equally as reliable in coverage playing off-coverage. He is physical at the point of attack and at the line and well-adept patrolling the middle of the field.
As a senior for Port Arthur Memorial, Gulbeau collected five interceptions in various game situations last season and came away with another one as a senior. He's a willing tackler that can cover and patrol outside the numbers or work inside in the nickel.
