BRADENTON, Fla. – Not so long ago, Houston Griffith was certain he’d be committed by now. His plan was to choose a school sometime in July and put everything behind him before his senior season at IMG Academy.

As is the norm in recruiting, however, things changed quickly. These days, the timetable for a commitment is “mid-season.” Still, the programs in the running to land the Rivals100 safety remain static.

“It’s Florida State, Penn State, Ohio State, Nebraska,” Griffith said on Wednesday.

And so visit dates are being set. Griffith will visit Florida State for the Seminoles’ game against Miami on Sept 16. It will be his first time in Tallahassee, but Griffith’s maiden voyage will be taken under the watch of high school teammate and FSU commit Verdis Brown

“Verdis says that we should just stick together,” Griffith said. “We went to freshman and sophomore year together, and now he’s here at IMG. It would be great for us to be able to just go to college together.’

Griffith’s FSU journey is set in stone. Other trips on the docket, however, are still in flux. He expects to announce his official visit to Nebraska in the coming weeks, however, and will also have a friend along for the ride.

“I have to figure out what date I’m going to visit Nebraska,” Griffith said. “I’m looking forward to being there and going with some of my teammates.

“Probably Brendan Radley-Hiles is somebody I’ll go on that visit with. I know that one. Maybe more.”

Penn State and Ohio State are also firmly in the mix to land Griffith, who is originally from the Chicago area. The allure of both places doesn’t need stated. Official visits are coming, though, and they could well decide the four-star prospect’s recruitment.

“I talk to Urban Meyer every day,” Griffith said. “I’ve visited Ohio State a lot. I don’t have a date for the official yet. With Penn State, I don’t have a date either but I’m trying to go against Michigan – the white out. I’m looking forward to them.

Griffith, who originally attended Chicago’s Mount Carmel High School, is ranked as the No. 4 safety and the No. 44 overall prospect in the class of 2018.
