Rivals100 DB Derrik Allen commits to Notre Dame

Notre Dame picked up a major piece for it's 2018 recruiting class on Monday night when Rivals100 Marietta (Ga.) Lassiter defensive back Derrik Allen made his commitment to the Irish official. The nation's No. 36 player told Rivals.com that it was a tough decision but one that had been coming for a while.

"This happened a few months ago, when I was up there for a visit," Allen said of when he knew he wanted to commit to the Irish. "We haven't said much about it to everyone but it just clicked in my head least visit I had. I loved it. Between the family environment, the academics and on the field, it's an all-around great program."

Allen chose the Irish over a number of major programs, including Clemson, Georgia and Alabama. The Army All-American said the chance to play defensive back and to play for new defensive coordinator Mike Elko also played a major role.

"He's a good coach, he can be playful at times but he knows when to get serious," Allen said. "He always has my best interest in mind and that made an impact when he told me how they want to use me. He said you're a defensive back and nothing else and that helped push them over the edge. They love my versatility and they think I'm a great fit in what they do."

Allen's father, Derrik Allen, Sr. said academics and the chance to earn a degree from Notre Dame was also a major factor.

"As a family we feel like Notre Dame is the best situation for Derrik on and off the field," Allen Sr. said. "It was a big part of our decision."

Allen's last visit was during the fall to watch a game and he said it can't wait to get back for the school's spring game.

"Everything about it felt right when I was there," Allen said. "I felt right at home and I love the tradition and the history the school has."

Allen's commitment adds to an already impressive 2018 class for the Irish, including four-star defensive back Kalon Gervin, who also committed to the school on Monday. In total the Irish already have eight commitments, six of which are ranked as four-stars.
