The Rivals.com/VTO Sports Pittsburgh Elite 100 comes to Monroeville, Pa., on Sunday and will be held at Gateway High School, one of the state's top producers in D-I talent. While the Gateway players are surely expected to ball out, especially some of the younger ones, there are others to keep an eye on. Rivals.com national analyst Mike Farrell takes a look at some of the players to watch on offense and defense, led by North Carolina commitment Ryan Switzer.
Rivals/VTO Sports Pennsylvania Elite 100: Offensive players to watch
Tyler Boyd, WR, Clairton, Pa.
There are some that think Boyd could be the receiver in the state of Pennsylvania with the most upside, even with Robert Foster so highly coveted, so he will be an interesting one to watch. He also has the ability to play safety in college so his versatility is impressive and he has the offers to prove it.
Zach Challingsworth, WR, McDonald (Pa.) South Fayette
Challingsworth has the MAC schools all over him right now with offers from Akron, Buffalo, Kent State, Ohio, Temple and Toledo but many feel he is a BCS-caliber player. We will get to see first hand on Sunday.
Sam Coverdale, OL, Chagrin Falls (Ohio) Kenston
Coverdale is a huge offensive tackle at 6-foot-7 and 280 pounds, and he has some nice offers from Cincinnati, Louisville, Northwestern and others. However, he's out to show he's more than just a regional recruit and a good camp showing could go a long way towards that.
Kevin Gladney, WR, Akron (Ohio) Firestone Senior
Gladney has offers from Michigan, Michigan State, Nebraska and some other heavy hitters and he will have some formidable competition at wide receiver at this event competing with Boyd, Challingsworth, Switzer and others. This should be a great group of wide outs.
Andrew Nelson, OL, Hershey, Pa.
Nelson has blown up in recent weeks earning offers from Maryland, Northwestern, Pittsburgh, Temple and Missouri, and it will be interesting to see how he's filled out his frame. We saw him in a game last season and could see his upside, but we expect an even better version at this camp.
Ed Stockett, QB, McKeesport, Pa.
Stockett is a huge quarterback with what looks like a cannon arm on film and he already has a Rutgers offer. With a slew of good receivers, he will get plenty of work and be able to improve his stock.
Ryan Switzer, ATH, Charleston (W.V.) George Washington
Switzer made a name for himself at the Under Armour Combine in January and has since blown up with offers from numerous schools. Despite his commitment to North Carolina, he is excited to come out and compete. He's expected to put up great testing numbers and push hard for that fourth star.
Rivals/VTO Sports Pennsylvania Elite 100: Defensive players to watch
Tyler Haddock, DL, Mc Kees Rocks (Va.) Montour
Haddock is a sawed off defensive tackle with great agility and explosion on film. While he has only a Kent State offer right now, it could be because no one has seen him in person recently. If he's added even an inch to his frame, he could earn some offers out of this event.
Jerome Lane, S, Akron (Ohio) Firestone Senior
Lane has an offer from Washington at this time but the big safety has great range and is coming off a good recent camp performance so he is looking to do big things on Sunday. The question is, how quick to the ball is he and how much ground can he cover? He will be able to answer that against a talented group of wide receivers.
Donovan Munger, DT, Shaker Heights, Ohio
Munger is a big, athletic defensive tackle with some major offers from Auburn, Georgia Tech, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn State, Tennessee and others. He has plenty of room to add to his frame as well, at least that's the way it looks on film, and it will be interesting to see how athletic he is.
Alonzo Saxton, CB, Columbus (Ohio) Bishop Hartley (2014)
Saxton already has offers from Illinois and Toledo and is on the radar of many other programs early on. He's right in Ohio State's backyard, but these days you have to be very special to earn an offer from Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes. Is Saxton that good? We'll see first hand against a great crop of receivers.
Brenon Thrift, LB, Munhall (Pa.) Steel Valley (2014)
Thrift has an early offer from West Virginia and he has great size for a linebacker and the potential to be a special player in Western Pa., for the 2014 class. How does he stack up to some of the top linebackers from the area in the last few years?
