Rivals.com will hit Cincinnati on Saturday for the Rivals.com/VTO Sports Ohio Elite 100 camp at Princeton High. Analyst Josh Helmholdt presents the players to watch at the event.
Rivals/VTO Sports Ohio Elite 100: Defensive players to watch
CB Cameron Burrows, Trotwood-Madison (Ohio)
The nation's No. 7 prospect overall and second-best cornerback will take a break from track season to get some gridiron work in on Saturday in Cincinnati. We first saw Burrows live last spring in an event like this, and he was completely in his element. The fluidity and speed with which the 6-foot-1, 195-pound prospect plays is extremely rare, and made him one of the country's highest sought defensive backs prior to a commitment to Ohio State in January.
DE Chikwe Obasih, Brookfield (Wisc.) Central
This four-star prospect is making the long drive from Wisconsin to show off his off-season progression. We last saw Obasih at the U.S. Junior Combine in January, where he had a very strong showing. At 6-4 and 235 pounds, Obasih plays with a linebacker's athleticism and is an ideal combination of pass rusher and run stopper. His offer list has already hit double digits, but he could be in for many more in the coming months and another strong showing Saturday will help that effort.
LB Brandon Lee, Indianapolis (Ind.) Lawrence Central (2014)
The 6-3, 200-pound Lee picked up his first scholarship offer, from Indiana, shortly after his sophomore season ended. Since then he has added two more from Ball State and Iowa, and is one of only a handful of Midwest prospects in the 2014 class sporting early offers. On film, Lee shows outstanding speed and athleticism. This will be our first time seeing him in person, though, and the interest is high in how he will perform.
LB Reggie Spearman, Chicago Simeon
This is the second week in a row we will have the opportunity to see Spearman in action, and based on the previous two times we have scouted him this off-season, expectations are for another standout performance. The only question is what position will the 6-2, 210-pound prospect play? He is no doubt a linebacker at the next level, but he likes to move down with the defensive linemen to show off his pass-rush skills.
Rivals/VTO Sports Ohio Elite 100: Offensive players to watch
RB Berkley Edwards, Chelsea, Mich.
The scholarship offers have finally started to roll in for Edwards, but the three-star back continues to get his work in this off-season. Edwards is one of the fastest running backs in the Midwest for the 2013 class, clocking a 4.41 40-yard dash last weekend at the Adidas Invitational. At 5-8 and 175 pounds, Edwards plays bigger than his size in pads. In a camp setting, he is able to show off his speed and receiving skills.
RB Ashton Jackson, Trotwood-Madison, Ohio (2014)
Trotwood-Madison already has four prospects rated three stars or higher in the 2013 class, but the talent in its younger classes may be even better. Headlining that list is the 5-10, 180-pound Jackson who was a featured running back in the Rams' backfield during their perfect 2011 season. Jackson is one of the fastest backs in the Midwest in any class, and we hear he has started to fill out his frame a little more since the season ended.
WR Thaddeus Snodgrass, Springfield, Ohio (2014)
The 6-1, 170-pound Snodgrass is coming off an impressive performance in January at the U.S. Army Junior Combine where he earned honorable mention all-combine honors among a very talented group of receivers. The state of Ohio features a number of elite sophomore wide receivers, and Snodgrass is among the best. He is both big and physical, and at the same time is a fluid route runner and has an effortless stride. He already has picked up his first scholarship offer.
WR Rob Wheelwright, Columbus (Ohio) Walnut Ridge
The younger brother of former Minnesota wide receiver Ernie Wheelwright, this Wheelwright is one of the state of Ohio's top wide receiver prospects in the 2013 class. Listed at 6-2 and 170 pounds, Wheelwright is a big-play threat and a great downfield receiver, but he also has the ability to catch the short and intermediate throws, and pick up yards after catch. It will be fun to watch him go against a strong group of cornerbacks in Cincinnati, led by five-star Cameron Burrows.
