Rivals Recap: Unsigned Preps

TAMPA, Fla. -- The Tampa-based Unsigned Preps training group held its annual showcase on Saturday, and there was college-bound talent peppered throughout the roster. Below are news and notes from the camp, which featured plenty of action and recruiting news.

I WAS IMPRESSED BY...

* Rivals250 defensive end Zachary Carter boasts an incredible build that includes tremendous length. His build is striking, sure, but what sets him apart is his quickness of the edge. Carter will undoubtedly play defense in college, but took some reps at wide receiver on Saturday and looked imposing lined up at the spot. Hyper-athleticism rarely comes in such large packages, but Carter has agility in spades. There was no more impressive prospect at the event than the versatile Carter, who proves to be capable of a little bit of everything.

* There’s no jamming Tampa Bay (Fla.) Tech wide receiver Daquon Green. The class-of-2017 wide receiver has always been powerful, but he seems to have added more muscle in recent months. He doesn’t have elite height to speed, but he showed himself to be a certified weapon on Saturday. Green runs sharp routes and catches anything thrown in his general vicinity. He’s likely a touch undervalued as things stand now.

I WAS SURPRISED BY...

* There was no shortage of young talent on display the showcase. No underclassman was more impressive that class of 2019 wide receiver Maurice Goolsby, who already has college-ready length. His routes were shockingly good for a player of his relative youth. Other players at the camp spent the afternoon remarking on how shocked they were by the massive prospect’s age. Goolsby holds early offers from North Carolina and Florida for a reason.

* Seffner (Fla.) Armwood wide receiver Warren Thompson showed plenty of promise on Saturday. His size and speed are a striking combination for a sophomore. He caught a number of balls that seemed to be thrown off line and made habit on bailing quarterbacks out of ill-advised throws.

OTHER NOTES...

* Zachary Carter says he intends to attend junior day at Clemson and Florida. For the time being, the four-star prospect names Clemson, Florida and Ohio State as standouts in his recruitment. He’s likely to add more visit dates as the offseason progresses.

* Rivals100 athlete Devan Barrett didn’t work out at the showcase because of a minor injury, but he looked on from the sideline. Barrett says he hopes to visit Florida, Florida State and Miami this offseason and say the local schools hold an advantage in his recruitment. Barrett says he would ideally like to stay in Florida for college and has a hard time imagining him leaving the Southeast region. Barrett is in no rush to make a decision and says he is unlikely to make a commitment this year.
