Rivals Recap: St. John Bosco vs. La Mirada

How would the Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco offense perform without

five-star quarterback Josh Rosen, who just won the starting job as a
freshman at UCLA? The answer from Friday night: perfectly fine. Bosco
opened the 2015 campaign with a resounding -- and telling -- 76-8 defeat of La
Mirada, Calif., in the season opener.
I was impressed with...
The Bosco offense is in fantastic shape with senior quarterback Quentin Davis, who might not be a high-level prospect but could emerge as a steal
in this class if he continues to play so well. Davis, who replaced Rosen this
season, threw for six touchdowns (many around 30-yards or so) and he also ran
for a score in the blowout victory. Davis was calm as could be, showed he could
be a running threat as well and all night through perfect passes to a bunch of
outstanding receivers.
Washington commit Sean McGrew is dynamite coming out of the
backfield and he showed off tremendous skills Friday night. Although he's
undersized, McGrew is still physical and bounces off tacklers. He keeps his legs
churning for extra yards. And give the four-star any space and he's gone for big
yardage. McGrew scored on a 3-yard run but he was unstoppable all night catching
passes out of the backfield, following his blockers and gaining big yards every
time he touched the ball.
Wyatt Davis continues to prove he's one of the best offensive linemen
in the 2017 class. The 6-foot-3, 328-pound four-star played left tackle all game
and easily handled La Mirada's pass rush which included three-star USC
commit Keanu Saleapaga. Davis, who will play offensive guard in
college, moves well, is super physical and moves his feet well in a fast-paced
offense.
D.J. Morgan had a big night -- and it could've been even bigger. The
four-star Bosco defensive back recovered a fumble and he also had an
interception on the sidelines but the La Mirada quarterback was over the line of
scrimmage so it was called back. Still, Morgan moved better that we've seen him
in recent seasons and he covered ground well. He has great size, he has length
and he was a playmaker on Friday night.
I was surprised by...
Re-Al Mitchell is Bosco's backup quarterback this season but one team
source said there is a chance Mitchell could be one of the best dual-threat
prospects in the country in the coming years. The 2018 prospect has a chance to
be special because he is so unbelievably fast and elusive when he's running it
is fun to watch. Mitchell ran for two touchdowns on Friday night one going for
about 70 yards and offensive coordinator Chad Johnson said Mitchell has an arm,
too -- one he didn't have to show off in the blowout.
Saleapaga did not have a big night but there is potential. The three-star is all
of 6-feet-5 and 270 pounds and he's fast off the edge but needs to be more
physical. Bosco's offense runs so fast that it was impossible for defensive ends
to come off the edge to make plays but Saleapaga got into the backfield a few
times. If he lined up at defensive tackle -- which might be his long-term
position -- Saleapaga could have had at least a few more tackles.
Notre DameClick Other thoughts...Here to view this Link. could be making a run at McGrew. The four-star all-purpose back said
the Irish coaching staff told him that they could take two running backs in this
class and that he could be their guy. McGrew is committed to Washington and said
no matter what he could prefer playing in the Pac-12 but if Notre Dame offers
then he could take a trip to South Bend.
Morgan,
a former Arizona State commit, still only has one official visit
scheduled to Notre Dame next weekend for its season opener against
Texas but he's also looking at an important trip to
California. Nothing has been finalized yet but the four-star could
definitely visit with the Golden Bears before making another decision. Morgan's
grandmother is originally from South Bend (she lives in Southern California now)
but that could play a factor.
