Rivals Recap: Michigan

ANN ARBOR - League rivals Ann Arbor (Mich.) Pioneer and Ann Arbor (Mich.) Skyline squared Friday night with the Pioneers taking home a 39-7 victory. It was a great opportunity to see young talent on both squads play. Here is a look at the top performances and notable recruiting news coming out of the game.

TOP FIVE
1. LB Antjuan Simmons, Ann Arbor (Mich.) Pioneer (2017)
Early-season film has generated a wave of new offers for Simmons, and he continued his impressive performances Friday night. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound prospect plays both sides of the football, but was most impactful on defense. Simmons plays 100 miles per hour throughout the game and knows how to deliver the big hit, which he did multiple times. On offense he punched in a 3-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, but his athleticism and ability to fly around the field on defense stood out the most.
2. RB Jamel Powell, Ann Arbor (Mich.) Pioneer (2018)
The 5-foot-10, 165-pound Powell was the breakout star Friday night, busting out a 97-yard run for the game's first score, then coming back almost immediately and scooping up a fumble that he returned 65 yards for his second score of the night. Powell would then add his third touchdown later in the game on a 14-yard run. The sophomore still has some rough edges to smooth out in his game, but flashed big-play potential and showed outstanding straightline speed on his long runs.
3. WR Hunter Rison, Ann Arbor (Mich.) Skyline (2017)
A four-star prospect, Rison got off to a rough start with two early drops, but quickly righted the ship and pulled in five receptions for 74 yards before the half. He would finish the game with seven catches for 96 yards, though was kept out of the end zone. Rison is usually a sure-handed receiver, so the drops were a surprise. What was not a surprise was his ability to pop in and out of his breaks and create instant separation from defensive backs, something he showed throughout the off-season.
4. DB Cedric Benton, Ann Arbor (Mich.) Pioneer (2017)
Benton was another breakout star for Pioneer on Friday night and should see plenty of recruiting attention in the coming months. A 6-foot-1, 175-pound two-way player, Benton made a lot of big plays on offense earlier in the season, but stood out most from his safety position Friday. He shows the ability to come downhill and be very effective in run support, but also has range in coverage. A 54-yard interception return was the highlight of his game defensively.
5. ATH Charles Jones, Ann Arbor (Mich.) Skyline (2017)
Jones has been Skyline's do-everything player this season. With injuries in the front seven, the 5-foot-11, 208-pound junior has moved down to defensive end to help his team and accounted for himself very well in that role. Jones is a strong and powerfully built football player who was disruptive in the backfield. He is also the Eagles' primary ball carrier and scored their only touchdown of the game on a 23-yard run in the second half. Five Mid-American Conference schools have already offered Jones, and the only question is what position does he best project to in college?

NEWCOMER TO KNOW
LB Treshaun Hayward, Ann Arbor (Mich.) Skyline (2017)
Hayward is a player Skyline coaches have been very excited about over the first half of the season. The 6-foot, 220-pound linebacker certainly looks the part physically, with a solid build on a frame that should be able to handle more weight easily. The junior is still raw and got caught overrunning plays at times, but the physical tools are certainly there and with college coaches coming in to see his highly touted teammates, Hayward should get plenty of looks this off-season.
