Rivals Recap: Miami

MIAMI -- Friday saw Miami Booker T. Washington defeat Cocoa Beach (Fla.) Cocoa

High School 33-14 in a state quarterfinal game that showcased a number of
FBS-bound prospects. That game itself wasn't particularly dramatic, but there
were a number of individual prospects that showcases impressive skill sets.
Below is list of news and notes pertaining to the contest's top players.
I was impressed with...
Four-star Chauncey Gardner rarely left the field on Friday. He plays
defensive back, wide receiver and returns kick for Cocoa High, which rightfully
relies on their star to carry a massive workload. Gardner, of course, was most
impressive on defense, where his size, physicality and closing speed have always
made him an elite prospect. He played a lot of safety on Friday but is certainly
capable of playing corner in the SEC. Gardner, a Florida commit that is still
considering Alabama, is an incredibly physical prospect that has never shied
away from contact.
Bruce Judson, a one-time Ohio State commit, won't play quarterback at
the college level, but does so effectively for his high school team. On Friday,
Judson was of a run-first mentality and broke a number of big runs. Judson's
acceleration is what makes his skill set pop, but he runs with shocking power
for a prospect of somewhat limited size. Judson, who is thought to be leaning
toward Florida, rushed for 133 yards on Friday.

I was surprised by...
Class of 2018 defensive lineman Jaquan Beaver may have an incredibly
bright future if he adds some size. Beaver will play either defensive end or an
end-linebacker hybrid role depending on how he develops physically was a
certifiable force for Booker T. on Friday. Twice, he ran down a ball carrier
from across the field and routinely caused havoc in the Cocoa backfield. Just a
sophomore, Beaver already holds a handful of scholarship offers and will likely
see his offer list grow significantly in the coming years.
Booker T. Washington Raymond Flanders is a bit undersized at 5-foot-10
but he shined on Friday. Flanders, who holds an offer from Cincinnati
caught nine passes for 87 yards in the contest and was one of the main offensive
catalyst for a Tornadoes offense that slapped 33 points on the board against a
solid Cocoa High defense. Flanders showed an ability to crisply run a number of
different routes and flashed solid-enough speed. His hands were the stars of the
show, however, as his jumping touchdown grab in the first quarter was possibly
the play of the game.
Other notes...
Just
a sophomore, Jaquan Beaver holds a scholarship offer from the former staff at
Miami along with invites from Cincinnati, FIU and
FAU. It's much too early for Beaver to name a leader, but says he would
like to land offers from Georgia and LSU. Ohio and Notre Dame are also involved with Beaver, though neither has offered him a
scholarship. Beaver says he hopes Alabama assistant coach
Mario Cristobal lands the head coaching position at Miami.
Booker
T. Washington wide receiver Darrius Scott, an FIU commit, flashed some
impressive elusiveness on Friday. When it comes to Scott, the Panthers are
getting a prospect with potential to be a dynamic player-maker. Scott is a bit
undersized, which may be the only thing keeping his offer list short. Temple is
also involved with Scott, who remains solid in his pledge to FIU.
