Rivals Recap: Lakeland vs. Plant

LAKELAND, Fla. -- A state playoff game that saw Lakeland High defeat
Plant High 21-11 capped off a big weekend in the Tampa Bay area. There were
other prospects to see, of course, as the weekend also included stops at other
area schools. Still it was Lakeland's besting of Plant that anchored the trip.
There was plenty of talent on display during the Friday night game. Below are
news and notes from the game and beyond.
I was impressed with...
James Robinson continues to impress as a junior. The four-star wide
receiver carried an otherwise sputtering Lakeland offense on Friday night,
catching five passes for 118 yards. He caught a long touchdown in the first
quarter and set up the game-winning score with a spectacular catch in the red
zone late in the game. Robinson looks to be the best junior wide receiver in the
region and could see his stock rise even higher than its current level the
coming months.

I was surprised by...
Plant High School defensive lineman Bo Peek seems to have developed in
a number of ways since the spring. Peek looks to have added weight and seems to
have diversified his pass-rush maneuvers. He's still not quite ready to play in
the Pac-12, but he has some interesting physical tools that will allow him to
contribute at some point at Stanford, to which he is committed. Peek's
trajectory is encouraging, as he seems to improve from month to month. Peek was
a big reason Plant held four-star running back Anthony Davis to just three
yards on Friday night.
Lakeland defensive back Torrian Hampton was impressive on Friday. He
possesses incredible length and closes quickly as well. He was a factor in run
support for the game's entirety and broke on the football as well as any
defensive back on the field. Hampton, who holds scholarship offers from
Middle Tennessee State and Florida A&M is a much better prospect than
his short list of college options indicates. Western Kentucky is also
involved.
Other notes...
Four-star
wide receiver James Robinson names no favorites in the process but
intends to visit Florida for the Gators' upcoming game against
Florida State. Schools such as Auburn, FSU, Clemson
and Miami are all heavily involved with Robinson, one of the state's
top juniors.
Class
of 2018 wide receiver Jermaine Eskridge of Tampa Jefferson holds a
number of scholarship offers already. He names no favorites in the process
because of the fact that his recruitment is in its infancy but intends to visit
Florida when the Gators host Florida State. Syracuse, Kentucky
and Virginia Tech are also in frequent contact with the sophomore
standout.
Junior
quarterback Cade Weldon of Jefferson High holds a handful of offers as
things stand now. Weldon says he is partial to Miami but is waiting to see how
the uncertain coaching situation shakes out before naming the Hurricanes as the
favorite to land his commitment. Florida State and UCLA are in contact
with Weldon, but neither has extended an offer.
Jefferson
High junior Jean Marcellus says that he favors Miami regardless of who
is hired as head coach, but notes that Kentucky is closing the gap. The
three-star offensive lineman is hoping to land and offer from Florida in the
LouisvilleClick near future. Here to view this Link.,
Indiana and USF have offered Jefferson defensive end
J'Bril Glaze, and Glaze says that Louisville currently leads his recruitment.
Glaze visited USF for the Bulls' game with Temple and says the in-state program
is starting to close the gap on the Cardinals.
