Rivals Recap: Future stars in Tampa

Like most weeks in Florida, the one past brought college-bound prospects

together on the field. On Thursday, Florida State commit Baveon Johnson anchored an offensive line that helped Lake Gibson (Fla.) High
School beat a Lake Wales team with BCS-level talent of its own in a 19-6 game
that featured plenty of defense. Friday night saw Lakeland defeat Fort
Lauderdale 48-0 in a contest that showcased more offensive firepower.
Below are some takeaways from the two games, which showcased a number of major
prospects.
I was impressed with...
Lakeland's James Robinson has a case to be the top 2017 wide receiver
in Florida. The four-star prospect is every bit of 6-foot-3 and moves like a
much smaller prospect. What goes unsung about Robinson is his physicality.
Robinson, who scored a pair of touchdowns in the first quarter alone, didn't
take a play off on Friday night and blocked as well as he ran routes. His size
and quickness make him special but his motor and aggressiveness may very well be
what set him apart. Robinson has all the makings of a very special player.
Four-star running back Anthony Davis of Lakeland (Fla.) High also lived up to
his four-star billing. Davis isn't the biggest back but has a tremendous bust
and great vision for an underclassmen. The 2017 prospect hits holes
with aggression and breaks tackles. He hard to bring down in the open field and
moves well laterally. There's a reason he has more than ten major offers, and he
showed it on Friday night.

I was surprised by...
The worry with A.J. Deshazor, a 2017 prospect, has always been that he's
a player caught between college positions, but he moved his big frame around
impressively on Thursday and looked fully capable of playing safety in an FBS
conference. A three-star prospect, Deshazor blocked a punt early in the game and
was the most active prospect on the field for most of the night. He has a great
build and is incredibly quick for his size. There are likely more offers in
store for the Lake Gibson junior.
Fort Lauderdale was overmatched on Friday but Miami commit Jaquwan Nelson and Wisconsin commit Dallas Jeanty were bright spots on
defense. Jeanty tipped a pass that was intercepted by Nelson, and both boasted
impressive builds for their respective positions. There's something to be said
for a dup that managed to flash impressive quickness and playmaking ability in a
blowout loss.
Like Gibson safety Hunter Orem has impressive size and pulled off the
day's most impressive play when he returned an interception 98 yards for a
touchdown. Orem, an FIU commit, was the game's most pleasant surprise, as he
showed off quickness that compliments his solid build. A physical defensive back
with broad shoulders, Orem could see some late scholarship offers come his way
this fall.

plans to visit the campus of each on the coming month. The three-star
quarterback plans to make a verbal commitment sometime before the end of his
senior season. On Thursday, Gaines was hot and cold. He showcased a massive arm
and threw a nice deep ball. He also stepped into throws and put them on the
money at times. That said, he had his share of lapses. Gaines is prone to pad
decisions and tends to throw across his body or off his back foot from time to
time. When he sets his feet and concentrates on his mechanics, he throws a near
perfect ball. Other times, relatively simple looking throws are offline. Gaines

commit Keyshon Camp, a three-star defensive line prospect, visited
Michigan over the weekend and intends to tour Alabama and
Oregon in the months ahead. Camp remains committed to USC but will
likely take all five of his official visits and for the Trojans to sweat a bit
down the stretch. Camp has no problem leaving the region for college and says he
looks forward to a change of scenery.
Florida
State commit Baveon Johnson remains an impressive physical specimen. He
moves well for a prospect of his massive size and was probably the most
college-ready looking player on the field on Thursday. Still, he didn't dominate
the way you'd expect. Johnson is fantastic in pass prospection and uses his wide
base extremely well. He looked less comfortable in run situations, especially
those that forced him to pull and block on the edge. Johnson, a solid Florida
State commit, is a physical freak that will improve with college-level coaching
and time.
Four-star
wide receiver James Robinson says he hopes to visit Alabama at some
point this season but does not have a date set as of now. He names no favorites
but says that Ohio State, Clemson and Notre Dame are
the most involved in his recruitment as things stand now.
