Rivals Recap: Cedar Hill vs. Coppell

Coppell traveled to Cedar Hill in a battle between two top Dallas-area programs.

Cedar Hill jumped out to a 13-0 second quarter lead, but Coppell stuck close.
Cedar Hill's advantage was cut to two at 23-21 late in the third quarter, and it
stayed that way until Cedar Hill was able to add a couple of late touchdowns to
pull away for a 36-21 win. The game featured several playmakers that caught our attention.
I was impressed with...
It was not always pretty, but Avery Davis got the job done. Coppell
did a great job of getting pressure in the backfield, but when it was all said
and done there was Davis with a 66-percent completion rate, two passing touchdowns and 249 yards through the air. He also led the team with 50
yards rushing with a 51-yard rushing touchdown.
He spread the ball around to different receivers throughout the night. One of
his most impressive throws was a pass to Camron Buckley as a defender came free
off the edge. Davis stood his ground, and put the ball where only Buckley could
get it even though he did not see the play completed. In the fourth quarter he
kept a key drive alive as he found Malik Orr for a 29-yard gain on
third and 24. A few plays later he found Orr for the 19-yard touchdown.
Rivals250 running back Kaegun Williams put the all-purpose in all-purpose back
Friday night. The 2017 standout did a little bit of everything. He caught
passes, he took direct snaps, he lined up in the slot, he picked up blocks. With
the ball in his hand he showed of his burst and sudden change ability. He was
too much for any one defender to get a handle on and he appeared to be
comfortable wherever he was put on the field. Coppell did keep him out of the endzone but that will not happen on most nights.
Friday was my first time getting an in-person look at 2018 Coppell quarterback
Brady McBride and there was a lot to like. His ball placement really caught
attention as he put the ball where only his receivers had a chance. The windows
were pretty small at times and McBride was able to find those windows with
consistency. He also has a quick release and when he scrambles he kept his eyes
down field.

I was surprised by...
Rivals250 wide receiver Charleston Rambo did not waste any time getting
involved in Cedar Hill's offense. The 2017 standout is the highest rated
receiver on a team full of receiver talent, and in his first game since
transferring from Woodrow Wilson during the offseason he tied Malik Orr and
Camron Buckley with a team-high four receptions. He turned those four receptions
into 45 yards receiving. He was able to glide past defenders and he was slippery
after the catch.
In a game that featured some pretty highly touted receivers it was Josh Fink with a game-high six receptions for a game high 76 receiving yards,
and a game high two receiving touchdowns. He also did it with SMU
commitment Eric Sutton in cover duty. In addition to his stats McBride
just missed him twice as he got behind the fast Cedar Hill secondary. It should
not be much of a surprise considering Fink was second-team all-district as a
junior and he leads Coppell with 34 receptions for 458 yards and eight
touchdowns. However, with the spotlight on other receivers going into the game,
it was Fink who took center stage.
Other thoughts...
The
TCU-SMU game is a popular destination for several top Cedar Hill
prospects. Camron Buckley, Kaegun Williams, Avery Davis, and Charleston Rambo
all mentioned plans to see who would win the Iron Skillet on Saturday at TCU.
Three-star
2017 linebacker Dimitri Moore mentioned Alabama as a program
showing a lot of attention, and he would to visit Tuscaloosa in the near future.
His brother Richard Moore is a freshman at Texas A&M. He has
already taken an unofficial visit to Texas A&M, which was nothing short of
impressive, and he would like to visit Texas State and
Illinois.
Cedar
Hill 2017 quarterback Avery Davis is not naming a leader in the recruiting
process, but Texas Tech is showing the most attention right now. He
also holds scholarship offers from Kansas, Oregon State, SMU,
Tulsa and Utah State.
Texas
Tech is also showing a lot of attention to 2017 Rivals250 wide receiver
Charleston Rambo, but right now Oklahoma is coming on the strongest.
Rambo likes the offense and he has already developed a strong relationship with
the Sooners' coaching staff. He took a recent visit to Texas Tech and he loved
the energy around the program.
Rivals250
running back Kaegun Williams who received his most recent offer from
Tennessee, says the Kansas Jayhawks are coming on very strong. He
mentioned the Tennessee-Arkansas game as a visit possibility. He would
like to visit Alabama, and he will visit TCU this weekend. He has already
visited Texas Tech and Texas this season.
