Rivals Recap: Adidas Invitational 7v7

DAVENPORT, Fla. -- The best 7-on-7 teams from Florida and Georgia gathered in the Sunshine State on Saturday for the Adidas Elite 12 Florida Invitational. With talent all over the field, there were plenty of noteworthy happenings. Southeast Recruiting Analysts Rob Cassidy and Woody Wommack recap the action.

I was impressed with...

James Robinson
James Robinson

Wide receiver Dontavious Butler of Plantation (Fla.) American Heritage had another nice showing. Butler boasts a thick frame and strong hands that allow him to out-muscle defensive backs. His speed is deceptive because of his impressive size, but he beat some corners with a nice burst on Saturday. - Cassidy

James Robinson is a five-star prospect for a reason and showed it in flashes on Saturday. The massive receiver played his natural position as well as defensive back. He continued to make plays despite being on the field for nearly every rep. Robinson showed signs of fatigue, sure, but the do-everything performance he turned in was still impressive. – Cassidy

Cardinal Gibbons High defensive back Daniel Wright had three interceptions on the day and bounced back after uneven performance in an event last weekend. Wright, who has named Florida State as his leader, has nice size and seems to be becoming more agile. – Cassidy

Powder Springs (Ga.) Hillgrove (2020) quarterback Harrison Bailey made national headlines last week when he picked up his first scholarship offer, courtesy of Miami, but on Saturday he was turning heads for another reason: his play on the field. With four-stars Chase Brice and Davis Mills both absent for the Atlanta-based Fundamentally Sound Sports team, Bailey took the he reins and helped the team for a 4-2 record in pool play. He showed poise and arm strength well beyond his years, and drew praise from opposing players and coaches alike. Bailey, who also visited Florida on Friday, will continue to make headlines as he adds offers this spring and expect him to be a mainstay on the recruiting scene for years. – Wommack

Jacksonville (Fla.) Trinity Christian cornerback Shaun Wade's team didn’t have the best day but Wade was his usual dominant self on the outside. His combination of length and coverage skills are extremely rare and every time I see Wade play I come away more impressed. Wade has always been able to use his size and strength at the line to jam and overpower smaller wide receivers, but was caught my eye on Saturday were some of the added moves to his arsenal. I think before it’s all said and done he will make a case to be even higher when it comes to the Rivals100 rankings. - Wommack

I was surprised by...

Quarterback Todd Centeio continues to have a nice 7-on-7 season. The former Miami commit has improved his footwork and looked incredibly accurate for most of the day. Ideally, Centieo would be a little taller, but he shines brightly on Saturday. – Cassidy

Class of 2019 wide receiver Mark Pope continues to project as one of the top sophomores in the state. He had a fantastic outing on Saturday and showed off burst and crisp routes. Alabama is thought to be the leader to land Pope, who plays for Miami Southridge High School – Cassidy

Other observations...

Already a large player, IMG Academy tight end Tre McKitty has added even more muscle. McKitty looked more like a defensive end than a tight end on Saturday and could be a nightmare if he tried his hand at the position. That said, McKitty’s massive frame makes him an interesting weapon at the tight end spot, where he has the ability to be an elite blocker down the road. – Cassidy

Three-star Covington (Ga.) Newton wide receiver and recent Michigan decommit Jeremiah Holloman looks the part of a big-time college receiver, but there were several plays on Saturday where he failed to haul in very catchable balls. He runs solid routes and was open all afternoon long, but none of that matters if the play is finished off with a completion. On the recruiting front, Holloman is weighing all options following his decommitment, but an offer from Auburn could make things very interesting when it comes to his recruitment. -- Wommack

Georgia linebacker commit Breon Dixon was all over the field for his squad on Saturday, making several pass deflections as well as “tackles” in key situations. Because of his size Dixon is sometimes viewed as a hybrid between linebacker and strong safety and his coverage skills were on full display when he was matched up against running backs and slot receivers. He has terrific instincts, which also serves him very wells 7-on-7 setting. – Wommack

One potential sleeper who caught my eye was defensive back Jaylon Jones from Dacula, Ga. The rising senior regularly matched up against the opponent’s best wide reciever and he did a great job of using the boundary to limit big plays. He drew consistent praise from his coaches as well and could be a name to watch when it comes to potential offers during the spring evaluation period. - Wommack

Treasure Coast Elite hung around all day on Saturday, taking out some of the tournament’s more well-known teams. A big reason for that was the play of 2018 Fort Pierce Central linebacker David Reese. The long, rangy linebacker was all over the field, making several pass deflections and closing windows in a hurry with his instincts. He was playing in the middle for his team and looks like he will likely end up playing outside at the next level, but either way he’s a young name to watch going forward. - Wommack
