Rivals Reaction: Rivals250 RB Isaiah Spiller commits to Aggies

Even before Rivals250 running back Isaiah Spiller ever de-committed from Oklahoma, the speculation was present that Texas A&M would ultimately end up being the program that he committed to. On Friday afternoon, Spiller dropped a commitment video announcing his decision to do just that, putting an end to the anticipation of the possible move before the start of his senior season. Spiller is the son of former Aggies tight end Fred Spiller.

WHAT HIS COMMITMENT MEANS FOR TEXAS A&M

Maybe this would have happened even if Jimbo Fisher hadn’t made the move to College Station, but there is no denying that the new staff has given A&M all sorts of recruiting momentum - especially in its backyard of Houston. Spiller is the highest-ranked running back in the state in 2019, and adds even more juice to a potent offensive cast all heading to Aggieland. As a runner, Spiller doesn’t do any one thing in particular that gives him a unique calling card, but he’s a tough and patient back that can wear a defense down by chipping away at it over the course of game until he’s picking chunks of four, five, or six yards per carry. Despite his incredible performance catching the ball at the Houston event of the Rivals 3 Stripe Camp Series presented by adidas, there is a larger sample size that suggests he’s not the most natural pass-catcher. When he looks the ball in, he can be dangerous, but sometimes taking a catch for granted results in a few dropped passes. Overall, however, he’s a well-rounded weapon out of the backfield that has all the potential to be a strong three-down option in the backfield.

WHO IT HURTS

The easy answer is Oklahoma, who found itself back in the picture with his recruitment following a cooling off period shortly after his de-commitment. After the Sooners took a commitment from high three-star running back Marcus Major at the end of last month, that probably put the remaining interest with Spiller to bed. The same sort of situation occurred with Michigan, who might have otherwise been considered the dark horse in Spiller’s decision, but the Wolverines also took a recent commitment from four-star running back Zach Charbonnet and had Tennessee product Eric Gray committed as well. That really just leaves Ole Miss, who also has a running back commit in three-star AJ Finley, but likely would have liked to add the overall talent that Spiller would have otherwise added to its class.

OTHER IMPLICATIONS

Since it looks as though his other serious choices all appear to have their guys and now he’s committed to the team his father played for, the odds seem best for things to remain as such. Spiller hasn’t ever really seemed overly convinced about much having to do with his recruitment, so even if new team suddenly chose to make a major play for him, he doesn’t come across as the type of person that would be particularly motivated to make a big reconsideration of his commitment. The Aggies are now up to 22 commitments in 2019 and appear to have just a couple of key players that they’re hoping to close their class out with. Spiller is well-liked and should be another charismatic voice in influencing other recruits to come aboard, but regardless, things have looked very positive for Fisher in his first crack at recruiting in Texas.
