Rivals Reaction: Bobby Wolfe commits to Texas A&M

Four-star cornerback Bobby Wolfe announced his commitment to Texas A&M Wednesday, on the final day of competition of The Opening in Frisco, Texas. After having been previously committed to the Aggies following an early junior day event this spring, it wasn’t long before he backed off of that and re-opened things again. Prior to his pledge to the Aggies, he had been committed to Ole Miss, but de-committed following the dismissal of previous head coach Hugh Freeze.

WHAT HIS COMMITMENT MEANS FOR TEXAS A&M

The Aggies have had a lot of positive momentum on the recruiting trail this spring and summer and getting Wolfe back into the 2019 class is another show of strength as A&M continues its recruiting success in the Houston area. A&M hasn’t signed a true cornerback since 2017 and Wolfe checks a lot of the boxes for what is desired from a solid perimeter defensive back. He has exceptionally quick feet and hips, considering how long he is. Perhaps his most impressive trait is his ability to break and close on an incoming pass and getting a limb between the ball and its receiver. Wolfe is quick but can sometimes fall victim to anticipating a pass or route and let a player behind him. Still, he is one of the top cornerbacks in Texas this year and reeling him back in is a nice win for Texas A&M.

WHO IT HURTS

Arkansas was the only other team that was truly in the hunt for Wolfe and the Razorbacks would have loved to add another four-star prospect to Chad Morris’ first class in Fayetteville. Very early on, he made moves to recruit players that have were also targeted by the Aggies but hasn’t been overly successful to this point in those head-to-head battles. Arkansas has now seen a couple of cornerback targets in Texas choose other options but wasn’t quite in as dire of need in filling the stable as A&M was heading into this recruiting class. The staff still has offered players on the board, and in Texas, could shift its focus heavily to a player like Myles Brooks.

OTHER IMPLICATIONS

Wolfe has long been personally connected to high four-star cornerback Erick Young, who is set to make his commitment on July 4. The pair have openly discussed their desire to continue playing together in college and as their respective recruitments have played out over the spring and summer, it looked more and more as if things could only be trending towards the Aggies. Wolfe is a super-charismatic personality and should be able to help A&M continue to recruit other targets with just a couple of spots left to fill in the class to-date. Wolfe – and presumably Young – could be set to pair with the safety duo of Brian Williams and Demani Richardson to give A&M arguably one of the best secondary hauls in 2019.
