In the new Rivals.com Midlands Top 25 Quarterbacks, Tate of Baytown (Texas) Lee leads the way. The Texas A&M commitment is 6-foot and 175 pounds and is already the all-time leading passer in Texas state history.
He is the state's all-time leader in career completions and attempts, passing touchdowns in a game and single season completions.
But not too far behind him is Battle, a do-it-all dual-threat quarterback that is hoping to lead Denton (Texas) Ryan to a second-straight state championship.
So far Ryan is 8-1 on the season, thanks in part to Battle’s big-game play.
The teams battling to land Battle include Iowa, Missouri, Kansas State and Tennessee.
The rest of the top 10 has a definite Texas flavor to it. At No. 3 is Tyler Lee and LSU commit Matt Flynn, No. 4 is Arlington Sam Houston quarterback Devin Williams, No. 5 is Spring Westfield standout Mark Spivey, No. 6 is Texas Tech pledge Phillip Daugherty of Bridgeport and SMU pledge Ricky Joe Meeks is at No. 7.
Two Missouri quarterbacks have also made the top 10 – Weston West Platte signal-caller Adam Barmann, who is a Kansas pledge, is at No. 8 and Purdue commitment Scott Carroll of Liberty is at No. 9.
Both Oklahoma State and Iowa State have two quarterbacks committed on the list. The Cowboys have pledges from Kevin Kolb at No. 15 and Mike Friess at No. 18.
Iowa State has commitments from Atlantic, Iowa, quarterback Bret Meyer, ranked No. 12 in the Midlands and Nate Mechaelsen of Blairsburg (Iowa) Hamilton. Mechaelsen is ranked as the region’s No. 22 ranked quarterback.
