Rivals Camp Series L.A.: Things to watch

The Rivals Camp Series Presented by Under Armour is a new series of invitation-only regional camps for selected participants who are considered among the best in the country at their respective positions.

It kicks off Saturday in Phoenix and then heads to Southern California on Sunday. Rivals.com West recruiting analyst Adam Gorney tells us what we can expect on the second day of the tour.
Can Quick keep it up?
Michiah Quick was outstanding at wide receiver and cornerback last weekend at the NLA 7-on-7 in Las Vegas and now on another big stage, the Fresno (Calif.) Central East four-star recruit will get a chance to prove himself.
Quick competed in the Rivals Five-Star Challenge last summer, so he knows big-time competition. He is likely up for another invite this year since Quick is older, more physically mature and has his junior season under his belt.
Can Quick dominate on both sides like he did last weekend?
No doubt, there will be a target on his back as players try to prove themselves against one of California's top prospects.
Will Mixon be top running back?
There was a death in the family for Joe Mixon this week, but he's still strongly considering making the trip to the camp to prove he's one of the top running backs not only in California, but in the country.
In recent weeks, Mixon has added numerous offers and he has already more than 30 offers as the offseason gets under way.
After a strong junior season, Mixon has been pegged as one of the nation's top running backs but there will be plenty of other top-notch running backs looking to make a bigger name for themselves.
Fresno (Calif.) Central East standout Nick Wilson will be there. Palmdale, Calif., recruit Demario Richard, who just added a Tennessee offer, is on the registration list as well.
Norwalk, Calif., prospect Rashaad Penny, Mission Hills (Calif.) Alemany's Kurt Scoby along with Corona (Calif.) Centennial's Tre Watson, Murrieta (Calif.) Vista Murrieta's Kishawn Holmes and 2015 recruit Austin Joyner will be a few of the other high-end running backs in attendance.
Wide receiver loaded from top to bottom
Whether it's 2014, 2015 or beyond, wide receiver is one of the strongest positions at the Los Angeles camp. It's going to be especially interesting and competitive because quarterback is solid and defensive back is loaded as well; One-on-ones should be lively.
Quick will be interesting to watch at wide receiver, but he's not the only top player. Far from it.
Fontana (Calif.) Summit's Erik Brown along with Jeffery Farrar, Zaire Andre, Shay Fields, David Williams, Michael Garner, Barry Ware and Darrell Cloy make up a solid group of 2014 prospects. In the 2015 class, Cordell Broadus (Snoop Dogg's son), Kanya Bell and Desean Holmes are some of the biggest names.
Tight ends Marquis Ware, who can play both ways and even be a wide receiver, and Chase Blakley will be interesting to watch.
Young quarterbacks could impress
Vanderbilt commit K.J. Carta-Samuels is the headliner at quarterback and for good reason, since he's a four-star prospect who looked good last weekend in Las Vegas. But there are plenty of 2015 prospects at that position who could shine.
Sandy (Utah) Jordan's Austin Kafentzis already has offers from BYU, Utah, Utah State and Wisconsin. Ventura (Calif.) St. Bonaventure standout Ricky Town has UCLA and Miami on his list. Sheriron Jones from Moreno Valley (Calif.) Rancho Verde could be a big-time sleeper who shines.
The 2015 class is definitely loaded, as is the 2014 group, led by Carta-Samuels. It features Brad Kaaya, JaJuan Lawson, Ian Fieber, Jalen Greene, Morgan Mahalak and many others.
Also expected at camp is 2017's Tate Martell, the San Diego standout who's already committed to Washington.
Look for surprises
This early in the recruiting cycle there are destined to be surprise standouts, especially coming from players who are just starting to land offers or guys who remain under the radar.
Here are five names to keep an eye on because they could have a big camp: Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., two-way standout Ralston Compton, Pleasanton (Calif.) Foothill quarterback Kyle Kearns, San Marcos (Calif.) Mission Hills linebacker Fred Warner, Los Angeles Salesian's Kyahva Tezino and Corona (Calif.) Centennial defensive back John Plattenburg.
