MORE: Who is the top RB? | Which college is Running Back U? | Who is ACC's best QB?
Rivals.com National Recruiting Director Mike Farrell and National Recruiting Analyst Adam Gorney don’t always see eye to eye. In this edition of Rival Views, the two debate which conference has the best 1-2 punch for power programs.
FARRELL'S PICK: THE ACC -Â FLORIDA STATE AND CLEMSON
I’ll go with Florida State and Clemson here. It’s shocking, first of all, that I didn’t even consider the SEC because the dropoff from Alabama to Tennessee is, at least in my opinion, huge right now. And the Big 12 wasn’t in the discussion in my head either. The Pac-12 is interesting with Stanford and Washington, and I think one will emerge as a true national title contender before all is said and done, but the question here comes down to the ACC against the Big Ten.
Florida State is No. 2 in the AP Top 25 and Clemson is No. 5. Clearly one of them will either knock the other out of playoff contention or fall to Louisville - upset alert this weekend, Seminoles - but when it comes to talent I’ll take this pair over Ohio State and Michigan.
Clemson’s defense is young and they are replacing a lot of talent, especially in the secondary, but the Tigers are showing signs of becoming a dominant group under Brent Venables. And we all know the offense will begin to explode soon enough, there’s just no way it can’t. Florida State losing Derwin James hurts it tremendously, but it still has so much speed and talent on offense and some key playmakers on defense that I think the Seminoles can hang with anyone.
If the Seminoles get past Louisville this weekend, look for the Oct. 29 showdown with Clemson at home to go a long way toward determining the winner of the national title.
GORNEY'S PICK: THE BIG TEN - OHIO STATE AND MICHIGAN
The best one-two punch combination in any conference is Ohio State and Michigan in the Big Ten, and those two powerhouses could be raring up for a Nov. 26 showdown for the ages.
First, the coaches. Ohio State’s Urban Meyer and Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh are two of the best in the business. Meyer has won everywhere he’s been and he’s continued the dominant winning tradition in Columbus. Harbaugh has the NFL chops and in only his second year has the Wolverines among the top teams in the country.
There are some SEC combinations that could make an argument but Ohio State and Michigan are both trending up so far this season, as the Buckeyes and Wolverines have outscored their opponents by a combined 239-30.
As far as recruiting, maybe nobody other than Alabama’s Nick Saban does it better than Meyer. Ohio State’s class is second in the team rankings led by five-star prospects Trevon Grimes, Wyatt Davis, Josh Myers and Shaun Wade and a plethora of top four-star standouts.
When people think about the hottest teams in college football right now, the two teams that intrigue people the most and the rivalry that stokes so much passion is Ohio State and Michigan. And both programs are back to dominant status in the game.
