After suffering an early season injury, offensive tackle Quintin Richardson didn't think he'd be able to play in any all-star games this fall. Though he has had no problems playing through an MCL injury, Richardson still thought many would pass on him for All-American status.
When Richardson found out he was being selected for the Offense-Defense All-American Bowl on Jan. 4 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., his fears were put to rest.
"For Rivals.com to stick with me and select me for the bowl, I was really surprised and grateful," Richardson said. "I didn't think I'd make any bowls. I injured my MCL, I was out for several games, and came back to finish the season fine.
"Everything healed properly, so I'm going to have no problem playing. I just didn't think that I'd be one of the top guys selected after all of this."
Richardson says that with his high school season over and his commitment to South Carolina in the books, he's ready to go out and make his mark in front of a national television audience.
The all-star game will be televised live on ESPNU.
"There really isn't anything I need to prove now," Richardson said. "I'm already going to South Carolina, so I just want to have fun. That's really about it. I can't wait to be there."
Richardson's early commitment to the Gamecocks certainly ended the suspense for the talented offensive lineman. He chose South Carolina over scholarship offers from schools such as Auburn, Clemson, Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina, N.C. State, Tennessee, and Virginia Tech.
Wanting to stay close to home made his decision an easy one.
"I just felt like it was the right place for me," Richardson said about South Carolina. "The coaches, being around them really brought me in. They made me feel like family. The fans were great, too and showed a lot of love to me. Wanting to stay close to home, it was the perfect choice for me."
