Arizona State has emerged as the frontrunner for Demario Richard and the Sun Devils really moved up after the Palmdale, Calif., running back took his unofficial visit there.
"Arizona State is No. 1 right now," Richard said.
"I'm still going off the visit, the unofficial visit, and how much they've been contacting me and how much mail I'm getting from them. They're No. 1 right now."
Many prospects talk about the likeability of the Arizona State coaching staff and that was also something that stuck out to Richard, who finished with 1,839 rushing yards and 24 touchdowns in his junior season.
During his trip to Tempe, the Palmdale standout said he had a great time with the coaching staff and that's one of the many reasons the Sun Devils have emerged as an early favorite.
"I got that sense from the coaches," Richard said. "If I didn't have it then they wouldn't be No. 1 on my list right now."
Arizona and Arizona State are expected to stop by Palmdale soon as it gets spring practice underway on Monday.
In total, Richard has now landed offers from both of those programs along with Cal, Colorado State, Fresno State, Nebraska, Oregon, Oregon State, San Diego State, Tennessee, UCLA, Utah, Utah State, Washington and Washington State.
With spring practice just starting, Richard believes his recruitment could pick up even more and he's excited about getting new interest in the coming weeks.
Arizona State might be tough to beat but the 5-foot-10, 200-pound recruit wants to remain open to other possibilities if they happen to come as the off-season continues.
"We start spring football on Monday," Richard said.
"A lot of schools will be coming then. I'm looking forward to it. I just want to get this football thing rolling."
