Red Raiders add Texas DE

Lewisville (Texas) Hebron defensive end Phillip Jones consulted with several people close to him and decided it was time to make his decision public.
“I have a lot of people that I am real close to that have told me they really think Texas Tech is a great place,” the 6-foot-5, 240-pound Jones said. “I decided after talking it over and thinking about it that it is the right place for me to be.”

Jones chose the Red Raiders over Arkansas, LSU and a few others.
“Arkansas and LSU are the only other two I really considered,” he said. “I did have some other offers from some smaller places, but Tech was the only place I considered of the offers I had.”
Jones called Red Raider assistant coach Sonny Dykes with the news.
“Coach Dykes was real happy with my phone call,” he said. “We had a good talk about things when I called him.”
Jones plans to visit Lubbock later this month if the schedule holds up.
“I’m going to drive down there with my dad for an unofficial visit on August 28 if everything holds like it is. If we can’t make it for some reason, I will get down there for my official visit during one of the games this fall.”
