Recruiting news comes out of Army Combine

SAN ANTONIO – Lache Seastrunk, the star running back from Temple, Texas, wore USC socks at the U.S. Army National Combine on Friday in the Alamodome, but Trojans fans should not get too giddy yet. Seastrunk said there was no motive behind it.

"It's no statement or anything," said Seastrunk, who rushed for more than 1,500 yards in each of the last two seasons. "It's just a pair of socks."

Seastrunk did not have any significant recruiting news to offer but many other top prospects did, including Detroit Cass Tech cornerback Dior Mathis, who said Miami, Michigan, Florida and Ohio State are involved and he hopes to hear from Southern Cal. A commitment to the Hurricanes was close, but Mathis said he wants to focus first on academics.

Mathis also predicted teammate William Campbell will pick Michigan at Saturday's U.S. Army All-American Bowl.

"My mind was blown that Michigan wasn't in it," he said. "I still feel like it's Michigan. He loves being around his whole family, so I think it's going to be Michigan."

Orlando (Fla.) Dr. Phillips wide receiver Ricardo Miller said he is still firmly committed to Michigan, but Florida and others are trying to get in the mix.

Memphis (Tenn.) University School dual-threat quarterback Barry Brunetti said Tennessee, Florida, Oregon, Illinois, Texas Tech, UCLA, LSU and Alabama are the schools showing the most interest.

Even though the Gators have quarterback Trey Burton, who was also at the combine, in their 2010 class, Brunetti said that wouldn't dissuade him from keeping Florida high on his list. No favorites were named by Brunetti, who threw for 1,400 yards, ran for 800 and totaled 38 touchdowns this season.

McDonough (Ga.) Henry County's Markeith Ambles said his goal is to be the best wide receiver in the class, and after his performance at the combine he is in the argument for that acknowledgement.

Ambles said LSU and Alabama have offered and many others have as well. Georgia and Florida haven't offered but are showing interest, and Ambles said he'd like to hear more from Southern Cal. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound recruit said he likes every school that likes him.

"I don't care if it's freaking Georgia State," Ambles said.

Norfolk (Va.) Lake Taylor's Travis Williams said North Carolina, NC State, Virginia Tech, West Virginia and Louisville stand out the most but he is still wide open. Oregon, Ohio State, Notre Dame and Florida have also expressed interest. Williams has 57 sacks in three seasons – getting 20 as a freshman, 22 as a sophomore and 15 this season.

Fresno (Calif.) Edison safety Tevin McDonald said Southern Cal is his favorite school and Oregon is in the mix, too. His brother, T.J., is a Trojans commit and his father, Tim, also played at Southern Cal. California is also involved, and McDonald said he wants to stay on the West Coast.

DeSoto, Texas, cornerback Adrian White said Texas Tech sends him a hand-written letter every day and that the Red Raiders have been the most active in his recruitment. Texas A&M and Miami are also interested, and he hopes to hear more from Florida.

Chesapeake (Va.) Oscar Smith quarterback Phillip Sims' list continues to grow and he said Alabama, LSU, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Southern Cal and Miami are his top schools. Among the in-state schools, Virginia is in front.

Tulsa (Okla.) Tulsa Central athlete DeMarco Cobbs did not report any new offers – Oklahoma, Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, Tulsa and Arkansas are on the list – but he said Georgia, LSU, Florida and Alabama have stepped up their efforts. Cobbs said Texas was his favorite school growing up.

The newest offer for Frederick (Md.) Thomas Johnson linebacker Nick Forbes is from Wake Forest. Forbes also has Boston College, Maryland, Pittsburgh, Stanford and West Virginia on his list and said he has no favorites.

Missouri City (Texas) Fort Bend Marshall cornerback Toney Hurd Jr. lists a new offer from Auburn. California, Oregon and Texas A&M have also offered. Germantown (Md.) Northwest's Hassan Dixon, who ran a 4.44-second 40-yard dash, said interest has picked up from Maryland, Pittsburgh, Stanford and Notre Dame.

Newark (Del.) Hodgson Vo-Tech's Jamaal Jackson said he has offers from Boston College and Rutgers and is hearing from Virginia, UConn, Maryland and Pittsburgh. Washington (D.C.) H.D. Woodson cornerback Don Hursey said Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Boston College, West Virginia and Maryland are coming on strong.

Pittsburgh (Pa.) Penn Hills cornerback Cullen Christian still lists offers from Michigan and Pittsburgh with more interest from Syracuse, Illinois, Virginia, West Virginia, Rutgers, Maryland, Ohio State, Penn State and Oregon.

Alabama is the favorite for Memphis (Tenn.) White Station's Fred Harvey, who also listed LSU, Auburn, Stanford, Vanderbilt, Texas Tech and Florida State. Harvey had 78 tackles and 21 sacks this season. The Seminoles were the top school for Monroeville (Pa.) Gateway athlete Dayonne Nunley.

Plantation, Fla., athlete Gilbert St. Louis said Florida State is showing him the most interest, but Florida, North Carolina, Kansas State and Alabama are involved. Tennessee is the only offer for Philadelphia (Pa.) Northeast quarterback Malik Stokes, and Michigan, Illinois, LSU, Alabama and Clemson were also mentioned.

Purdue, UCLA and Oregon are the top three schools for Rich Central, Ill., running back Giorgio Bowers, who said he'd like to leave the Midwest. He had 1,075 yards and 15 touchdowns on 104 carries this season. Ramsey (N.J.) Don Bosco Prep linebacker Ryan Cobb listed a top four of UCLA, Stanford, Boston College and Notre Dame.

Oklahoma and Oregon are the favorites for Tyrone (Ga.) Sandy Creek running back Rajion Neal, who also listed Clemson, Alabama and Arkansas. He said Florida has asked for transcripts. Pflugerville, Texas, offensive tackle Tyrus Thompson said Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma State, Houston, Oregon, Notre Dame and Rice are involved.

Penn State and Stanford are the latest to offer Stamford (Conn.) King & Low Heywood Thomas running back Silas Redd. Boston College, UConn and Virginia also offered. Cleveland (Ohio) Glenville's Rodnell Price said NC State, Illinois, Cincinnati and Ohio State are his top four.
