AUSTIN, Tex. -- Lake Travis three-star quarterback Matthew Baldwin has seen the first flickers of a recruitment that will likely take off by the time fall comes back around.

The Cavaliers won a Texas 6A state championship last season with current Baylor quarterback Charlie Brewer under center for most of the season, but Baldwin still saw the field throughout the year. In fact, he was crucial in picking up a huge early-season victory against another state championship contender.

“The second game versus Cibolo-Steele I got to come in and play,” he said. “We were down by three and I got to lead the game-winning drive. That gave me a lot of confidence … so I think I took a lot from last year.”

Baldwin should have no trouble putting up big numbers this season in an offense that pushes the ball out quickly and efficiently. Baldwin is a bigger quarterback than Brewer, who had fantastic success in that offense last year.

Helping his cause is 2019 4-Star wide receiver Garrett Wilson, who holds a number of top FBS offers as well. Baldwin was maybe only half-joking that he said he thought he made an impression on assistants that were by to see Wilson over the spring.

“Somebody had to throw him the ball,” he said.

For now, Texas-San Antonio is Baldwin’s lone FBS offer, but as he continues to throw at events this summer, he’s sure to be on many teams’ watchlists heading into this season.

IN HIS WORDS

On UTSA

“It was pretty cool because they played in a bowl game last year, so that was awesome,” he said. “I’m definitely interested. I’m going to go to a camp and meet the coaches - I’ve only talked to them on the phone, I haven’t actually met them yet.”

“It’s definitely important to me that they were the first to reach out,” he said. “I haven’t had a lot of exposure and they’re taking a chance, which puts them up there.”

RIVALS REACTION

Baldwin said that he felt he showed well for TCU and Oklahoma State over the spring and that both seemed interested in him. The issue at the moment is that Rivals100 quarterback Justin Rogers recently committed to the Horned Frogs and the Cowboys already have two committed in 2018.

The other thing that has worked against him to this point, is that his senior season will be his first as a starter. Had he been in Brewer’s spot last season, perhaps some of that interest would have been offers by now. Regardless, he’s in a prime position to pick up more as the leader of a potent pass offense.
