their talent. This marks the final camp before the grand finale - the Rivals Five-Star Challenge Presented by Under Armour on June 5-7 in Baltimore. With so many big names expected on hand in L.A., there will be plenty of
storylines to watch. Here's a breakdown of what we're looking forward to seeing
when things get started on Sunday.
Loaded at linebacker
Bryce Youngquist
One of the top position groups in the state of California and, in turn, at
Sunday's camp will be linebacker since many of the state's best players are
prepared to compete against the best the West Coast has to offer.
Fresno (Calif.) Clovis West's Caleb Kelly, the top-ranked player in the
state, and fellow five-star prospect Breland Brandt from Los Angeles
Windward are expected to lead the group. Not far behind are Lokeni Toailoa,
one of the best inside linebackers in the country, and soft USC commit
Mique Juarez, who is quickly emerging as one of the state's best
players.
Rancho Cucamonga (Calif.) Los Osos recruit Bryce Youngquist took home
Linebacker MVP honors at the Rivals Camp Series in Las
Vegas, and he'll be back for a second go-around on Sunday. Four-stars Krys Barnes and Darrian Franklin will also look to impress at that
position.
Exciting matchups
Lamar Jackson
The lists of top players expected to compete Sunday at wide receiver and
defensive back reads like a Who's Who list of recruits from the West region,
which should mean incredibly competitive one-on-one sessions are close at hand.
Four-stars Tyler Vaughns, Javon McKinley, Dylan Crawford,
Trevon Sidney, Damian Alloway headline the wide
receiver position, but this is a balanced group with depth in every class. Los
Angeles Hawkins standouts Joseph Lewis and Jalen Hall are two
of the most promising underclassmen receivers expected to attend.
Then there are players like Jack Jones from Long Beach (Calif.) Poly,
who's currently ranked as a receiver but has made his bones this spring by
dominating at cornerback.
If the receivers look like a solid group, don't forget the defensive backs.
Five-star Darnay Holmes, a 2017 prospect, should lead the way along
with other standouts in his grade like Deommodore Lenoir, Greg Johnson and
Thomas Graham.
The 2016 class will be well-represented as well by RCS: Las Vegas
Defensive Back MVP Lamar Jackson, four-star CJ Pollard,
David Long, Chacho Ulloa, Treyjohn Butler and many
more. Top 2017 Oregon recruit Elijah Molden and the top-ranked prospect
in Arizona, cornerback Byron Murphy, will also be working out.
The one-on-one competition between the receivers and defensive backs should be
hotly contested.
Offensive linemen could excel
Frank Martin
One of the best portions of a Rivals Camp Series event
is the ability to watch numerous one-on-ones along the offensive and defensive
lines. On paper, it looks like the offensive linemen might have an edge but
they'll have to prove it on the field.
USC commits Frank Martin and Nathan Smith lead the
way closely followed by four-star Alex Akingbulu, California
pledge Daniel Juarez and others. Wyatt Davis, a 2017 prospect
from powerhouse Bellflower St. John Bosco, will see action as well. One player
that will be intriguing to see is Buena Park's Francisco Perez, who has
quickly landed big offers.
Along the defensive front, four-star Garrett Rand is tough and former
Arizona State commit Hunter Kampmoyer could emerge as a top
prospect.
Special delivery
Tate Martell
There is a lot of talk about the loaded wide receiver position, and for good
reason. Let's not forget about the quarterbacks who will get them the ball.
Plenty of committed players -- including Matt Fink (USC), Devon Modster and
Khalil Tate (Arizona) and Max Gilliam (Cal) -- will be some of the top 2016 recruits there. Another
Arizona pledge, 2017 standout Braxton Burmeister is also going to be at
camp.
Someone who has quickly emerged in recent weeks is Norco, Calif., recruit
Victor Viramontes, who could play either quarterback or linebacker in
college. Wisconsin and Nebraska are two of his latest offers.
And someone else to keep an eye on is 2017 four-star Tate Martell from
Las Vegas (Nev.) Bishop Gorman. Never backing down from any event, Martell will
be back for Sunday's camp after throwing at the Rivals Quarterback
Challenge and the Rivals Camp Series
earlier this spring in Las Vegas.
Young talent aplenty
Osiris St. Brown
There will be talent all over the field in the 2016 class and the classes of
2017, 2018 and even 2019 will be well-represented. One prospect who could be
really intriguing is 2019 athlete Max Williams, who will attend Gardena
Serra next season and has already started to draw some lofty comparisons.
Up and down the board will be underclassmen who will have plenty to prove --
like Hall, the receiver from Los Angeles Augustus Hawkins who could be one of
the top players in his class.
Quarterback Matt Corral, 2018 receiver Amon-Ra St.
Brown and his 2017 brother Osiris St. Brown, and
countless others at every position will have an opportunity to shine.
