RCS Houston: Five things we learned

HOUSTON -- The second weekend of the Rivals Camp Series presented by Under Armour wrapped up Sunday and many top story lines emerged from the events. Here are Five Things We Learned from the camp at Westfield High in Houston.

1. Waiting on Godchaux

Davon Godchaux was a guy we knew about going into Saturday's camp in Houston. He is a Rivals250 prospect, after all. However, he began sending a message before the athletes even hit the field. Godchaux was one of the more impressively put-together prospects of the entire camp. He has a solid build with a long wingspan and is already advanced from a strength standpoint.

Once drills began he showed off his footwork. Then in one-on-one pass drills, he put together the strongest afternoon of anyone in attendance. He comes off the ball low and quick. He was able to get the edge on each of his opponents. When he needed to show a counter-move, he was able to adjust and get to where he needed to go. Then he finished off showing impressive strength after getting opposing offensive linemen on their heels.

It is no wonder he already holds several offers and many top programs have him in their sights.

2. More than Noil and Willis

New Orleans (La.) Edna Karr standouts Speedy Noil and Gerald Willis III showed strong on the afternoon in Houston, but they were not the only ones from the Louisiana 4A State Champions.

Tight end Anthony Jones put together a strong day in drills and one-on-ones. He is a natural receiver with great size, and does not mind traffic. He proved to be one of the more consistent tight ends on the day and was a mis-match for linebackers in attendance.

Defensive end Joyan Williams also showed strong. He is not as big as Willis but he is a very strong counter-punch to the Rivals100 standout. At the camp he showed a great first step and some strong counter moves during one-on-ones.

Linebacker and LSU commit Donnie Alexander is already pretty well-known, but like his teammates also shined. He may be a little on the small side but he comes with some serious quickness.

A guy who came in under the radar but made a big impression was Jaevon Walton. He showed some surprising versatility and is a guy who could end up somewhere as an H-back/fullback type on offense or find a home on the defensive side.

3. Welcome to the party, Mr. Saunders

Mavin Saunders was a bit of an unknown coming into the Houston camp, but he quickly introduced himself. He has only played one year of football but the former basketball standout has caught on quickly.

In his one year of football, he split out wide for Houston (Texas) Kinkaid, but at 6-5, 225 pounds, he has the size to move into tight end on the college level. He is a natural receiver with a lot of athleticism.

Already Florida State has extended an offer, but you could see more begin to come his way.

4. Stating their cases

There were a number of 2015s in attendance in Houston with some impressive offer lists. Orange (Texas) West Orange-Stark safety Deionte Thompson entered the event committed to Alabama. Houston (Texas) Clear Lake tight end Jordan Davis committed to Florida State on Tuesday. Then there was Jalen Campbell of Corpus Christi (Texas) Flour Bluff who was the most impressive.

Campbell is a solidly built cornerback with great instincts and ball skills. He can get physical and he has exceptional closing speed. His leaping ability and long arms also make him a threat even when he appears to be beat. He was the guy all the receivers wanted to go against during one-on-ones and he more than held his own.

Davis has the size and frame college coaches love. He was comfortable catching balls in traffic and was not distracted by defenders contesting his reception. He is still developing but he certainly has a lot of tools.

Thompson comes equipped with A-plus size and athleticism. He oozes potential and it is easy to see what Alabama head coach Nick Saban loved about him once he set eyes on him. He needs to clean up some things and is raw but his natural ability is very strong.

5. As promised

Hoza Scott did not attend the entire camp, but when he showed up he made his presence felt.

The outside linebacker has size, instincts, and athleticism that set him apart from almost everyone in the country.

As a Rivals100 prospect who is just outside the five-stars, the expectations were high. He had some bumps in the road but overall put together one of the better performances of the day. He was comfortable in space and pass coverage and when the day was over he did not disappoint. In fact, he stated a strong case for defensive skill MVP despite missing half the camp.
