Ranking the Contenders: Marcus Burris

Marcus Burris
Marcus Burris

Rivals250 defensive tackle Marcus Burris is a unique prospect. He's an uber-athletic big man capable of playing multiple positions upfront. He's also seen spot duty on offense, proving how special a prospect he can be as he commands double-teams and puts pressure on opposing quarterbacks.

While Burris boasts a very impressive offer sheet, he has kept his recruitment largely under wraps. He's made visits to several in-state programs such as Texas, Texas A&M and TCU, and he's even ventured out-of-state to Alabama. However, this is boiling down to a three-team race with all of the contenders hailing from the Lone Star State.

Here's how we rank the contenders for his commitment.

1. TEXAS A&M

The Aggies offered Burris very early in his high school careers and have created a very strong presence in East Texas as they pursue the four-star defensive tackle. The communication is very consistent and the relationships are very strong at this point. Burris is a priority target for Texas A&M and landing him would represent a colossal recruiting victory within the state. Terry Pride is leading the charge for the Aggies and he instantly clicked with Burris.

2. TEXAS

Texas pieced together an impressive defensive line haul in 2020, landing Rivals250 in-state prospects Vernon Broughton and Alfred Collins. The Longhorns are hoping to repeat that success with Burris in 2021. Assistant coach Oscar Giles has clicked with Burris and the coach's family-first approach has resonated in a big way. Burris has taken in a few junior days and games in Austin and Texas should remain in contention throughout the four-star's recruitment.

3. TCU

While it's fair to label Texas and Texas A&M as the favorites, do not rule out TCU in this sweepstakes just yet. TCU has a proximity edge compared to the aforementioned Longhorns and Aggies, and TCU defensive line coach Zarnell Fitch has quietly been an ace recruiter for the Horned Frogs in recent years. Burris has visited TCU for games and is familiar with the opportunities available to him there. Expect Burris to strongly consider taking an official visit there before he makes up his mind.
