Quick can rely on teammates at Challenge

The dynamic of the Fresno (Calif.) Central East football family is clearly defined and Michiah Quick is the baby brother.

The Class of 2014 cornerback loves the role of pushing his elder teammates; he embraces the chance to learn from his "big brothers" -- Johnny Johnson, L.J. Moore, and Hatari Byrd.

"It is a great position for me to be in," Quick said. "I am the youngest of the group, so they are always making fun of me because I am the smallest, but I get to talk the most and when I do better than them I get to let them hear it."

Quick will be joined by Moore and Byrd at the inaugural Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge in Atlanta from June 22-24.

He will, again, be following in the older guys' footsteps.

"They make sure I am in the right spots and in the right place to make plays," Quick said. "There really isn't much competition between us because we all want to see the other succeed."

But if there were a friendly rivalry ready to set fire, Quick believes he would fare just fine.

"I get more picks than they do, if we want to be real," he said.

Moore and Byrd play safety, while the 6-foot Quick plays cornerback.

The trio will make up a core of the West Region team during the 7-on-7 portion of the exclusive camp. Quick is one of just 20 members from the Class of 2014 to receive an invitation and like any younger brother would, he is ready to tattle.

"I like to push those guys," he said. "If I see them slacking off I will just straight call them out on it and get them to play harder.

"I like to talk. I like to be that guy that let's everyone know what is going on."

With offers from Houston, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, and UCLA, Quick is already in the thick of the recruiting action.

He hopes that his performance will be one that puts the focus firmly on him.

"I want them to do well but I am there to play for me," Quick said. "If I ball out more than them, that would be great. I want to come back with at least three picks, I don't think they can do that, so that is my minimum."

If he succeeds in making his personal goal the first person will know is his mother.

"I am a mama's boy, for sure," Quick said. "My mom is always there when I need her and she has never let me down.

"When I got my invitation to come (to the Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge) she was the first person I called and told. She is super excited for me."

Quick said his teammates are also excited for him and he hopes that he leaves a lasting impression on the team of Rivals.com analysts in attendance.

"I want them to walk away thinking, 'that young kid never gives up and he is always in the right spot,'", Quick said.

"There are people that think Fresno kids can't play and that is their talk and I want to be a part of the group that changes that perception. I want them talking about my A-game."

Quick comes from a school and city that has been producing top defensive backs for years and he has worked against and with older players for quite some time. So don't expect him to be intimidated. Playing with L.J. Moore and Hatari Byrd and having that chemistry already in the defensive backfield will be key. He might be picked on by opposing quarterbacks because he is young, but don't expect him to be a weak link at all.
