QB Challenge Finals: Trevor Lawrence

The Rivals Quarterback Challenge Finals are Sunday in Baltimore with 12 of the nation’s top signal-callers from the 2017 and 2018 classes testing their skill not only against unforgiving immobile targets but also throwing to live receivers in coverage. Rivals.com National Recruiting Director Mike Farrell briefly breaks down each quarterback expected at the event.

Recruiting wrap: Lawrence has offers from more than 25 schools, but Tennessee, Georgia, Clemson and Florida appear to be in the best shape to land his commitment at this point.

What I like: Lawrence has great size and a frame where he could easily play at 230 pounds without losing any of his ability to move around in the pocket. He has a very strong arm, he delivers the ball from a consistent launch point and he has a good flow to his throws using his lower body well. He is advanced on his timing patterns already for a younger quarterback and everything he throws is on a line and is a dart. He uses his entire body when throwing and rotates his hips well into his throw.

What I want to see in Baltimore: The one thing Lawrence struggled with at the regional in Atlanta was overstriding at times and his release point was ocassionally too high. He is much better on zip passes than touch passes, so I’d like to see him take a little off at times and finesse the ball when needed. Nothing seems to bother him much and he’s a competitor, but I’d like to see him take the next step and amp it up in Baltimore with some additional focus.
