QB Challenge finalists: Mac Jones

The Rivals Quarterback Challenge Finals are this upcoming weekend in Baltimore with 12 of the nation’s top signal callers from the 2017 and 2018 classes testing their skill not only against unforgiving immobile targets but also throwing to live receivers in coverage. This week, Rivals.com National Recruiting Director Mike Farrell briefly breaks down each quarterback expected at the event.

Recruiting wrap: Jones is committed to Kentucky.

What I like: Jones throws a beautiful football, always a perfect spiral and leads his receivers well. He often puts the ball right into the perfect catching zone for the receiver and away from the defender and he’s good at allowing his targets to avoid breaking stride while catching the ball. Jones is good out of the shotgun but also solid with his footwork in drops and on the move. His arm strength is above average and will get better as his fills out his slight frame.

What I want to see in Baltimore: Jones threw back to back days in Atlanta like many who made the finals and his arm certainly wore down on day two. That’s a stamina and strength issue, so I’d like to see if he can finish as strong as he starts at the finals. When his arm does get tired, he tends to push the ball a bit and it can wobble on him. He also needs to show a bit more accuracy on the run as he’s such a comfortable pocket passer from his 7-on-7 training.
