Purvis feels Moorhead will bring championships to Starkville

Dan Mullen showed some interest in Pelahatchie (Miss.) star athlete Javeious Purvis, but he never offered before leaving for Florida.

Joe Moorhead came into Starkville and got Purvis on campus, evaluated him quickly and offered the scholarship. The in-state prospect did not wait long before making a decision, and he has been all Bulldog since.

IN HIS OWN WORDS

“Just going up there a lot, seeing everything, talking with coach Hood and having that feeling made me fall in love with Mississippi State. I have been there at least six times and I love it.

“I love the vibe. It is very hyped up there. I like the crowd and it is a hyped atmosphere. I went to the Kentucky game this year and it was my first game — I loved it.

“Every time I am there, coach Joe Moorhead just wants to make it like home. He calls me JP, he asks how I am doing and he just wants to make me feel at home. He talks to me like we have known each other for a long time and I like that. He is always texting me too, so I like that a lot. He wants to get to know me and that means a lot to me.

“I think coach Moorhead can lead State to a championship. He has to get the right players, have a little time and have everyone buy into what he has going on, then he can do something. I think he knows what it takes to win.”

“I love playing defense. I bring the hype and the ability that people want to come see. My biggest strengths are getting down hill and making big tackles. I am physical, but I can drop back and cover too. They want as a hybrid, playing safety and linebacker. I like the fit.

“I am only in contact with Mississippi State. My mind is made up and I know where I am going, so I have no reason to talk to other schools.”

RIVALS REACTION

Ole Miss still texts Purvis some he said, but he does not hear from too many schools anymore. He said all the right things about being strong to Mississippi State and there is no reason to think differently, but he did mention that he plans to sign in February, not December. We will see if that changes as we get closer to the Early Signing Period. Purvis is a strong, physical player who is likely to spend a lot of time in the box. With his size and skill-set, that looks like it could be a great fit for him.
