Purdue flips the commitment of three-star LB Jacob Wahlberg

Purdue has dealt another blow to Western Michigan, which loses its third three-star commitment in five days, when the Boilermakers were able to flip three-star linebacker Jacob Wahlberg of Muskegon (Mich.) Mona Shores from the Broncos. The news of Wahlberg's decision started to come out on Monday and was confirmed by his head coach.

THE LATEST

Wahlberg held seven Power Five offers from the likes of Boston College, Indiana, Minnesota and Pittsburgh even before he made his commitment to Western Michigan in June. Purdue was one of the first Power Five schools to offer Wahlberg last January, but the three-star linebacker still chose the home-state school. Following his senior season, though, Wahlberg re-examined his recruitment and started looking again at his options. He took an official visit to Purdue the weekend of Dec. 14 and made a decision to switch his commitment to the Boilermakers a day after returning home. He will sign with Purdue on Wednesday.

QUOTABLE

“As a high school coach, Jacob is the type of kid you get once every 30 years. He’s a great student, great practice player, great weight room kid, great person and on top of all of that, he’s 6-4, 225 lbs.” - Mona Shores head coach Matt Koziak.

RIVALS’ REACTION

We have rated Wahlberg as a Power Five caliber prospect from the beginning, in large part due to the qualities his head coach alludes to in the comment above. He has a big frame for a linebacker, but has played that position throughout his prep career because of his athleticism and field awareness. The Purdue coaching staff is expected to bring Wahlberg in to man their middle linebacker spot. A first team all-state performer as a senior, Wahlberg’s prep career came to an end at Ford Field with a 29-16 loss in the Division 1 state finals to defending champion Warren DeLaSalle.
