PSU likely the final official visit for four-star Johnson

Four-star cornerback Donovan Johnson just completed a perfect season and Division I state championship effort with his Detroit Cass Tech team. Now, the Rivals250 prospect is set to embark on one of the final chapters of his recruiting journey with an official visit to Penn State this weekend.

WHAT’S NEXT

The long-anticipated official visit to Penn State that Johnson has been forecasting will take place this upcoming weekend. The Rivals250 prospect has held that the Nittany Lions and Virginia Tech are his top two, and he confirmed Tuesday night that remains the case. Johnson is slated to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl with teammate Donovan Peoples-Jones on Jan. 7, but Johnson said that date is later than when he would desire to make his college decision and he is planning to make that announcement separate from Peoples-Jones.

IN HIS WORDS

“The plan is to go to Penn State this weekend. It’s a pretty big visit because after this I am pretty sure I can come to a decision.”

RIVALS’ REACTION

By virtue of being the last official visit on the docket, and the fact that the trip takes place almost three months after his official visit to Virginia Tech, Penn State is in prime position to finish off this recruitment this weekend. Coming off a Big Ten Championship with preparations for the Rose Bowl ongoing certainly does not hurt, but the Nittany Lions have to deliver on their opportunity this weekend. When Johnson visited Virginia Tech in September he left feeling that Blacksburg “felt like a place I could be at.” He needs to leave State College with that feeling, and more, this weekend if Penn State is going to be his choice. Our rankings spell it out, so I may as well not be coy – either Penn State or Virginia Tech will get a player several other regional programs flat-out missed on.
