Four-star 2017 standout Hunter Johnson took home QB MVP honors at the Rivals Camp Series in
St. Louis.
O'FALLON, Ill. -- The Rivals Camp Series Presented
by Under Armour was in the St. Louis area on Sunday and
brought out a cross-section of the nation's talent to O'Fallon High School. The
nearly 160 prospects who attended represented 16 different states, and one
participant even traveled from Canada to compete in the event.
The seven position MVP winners, fittingly, came from seven different states with
Arkansas, Colorado, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Missouri and the host state of
Illinois each represented. Youth was a theme on Sunday as well, as three of the
seven award winners were prospects in the class of 2017.
The most difficult MVP award to call came at defensive back, where
Northwestern commit Roderick Campbell put up a sensational
performance to edge out several others who were also exceptional. The offensive
line and defensive line MVPs awards also came down to the wire, with a final
showcase of the top players at the position needed to determine the award
winners on both sides of the football.
Five of the seven MVP award winners were three-star prospects who beat out
higher-ranked players for the award. The quarterback and wide receiver MVP
awards, meanwhile, went to Hunter Johnson and Jeff Thomas, two
members of the 2017 Rivals100 to Watch List. Thomas was one of the local
standouts and fought off all comers from outside the region that came in to
compete.
"I just wanted to set the example that we come out, work hard and play
disciplined," Thomas said. "I just showed people that I can catch the ball and
make adjustments."
Sunday's event was the penultimate regional competition in the Rivals
Camp Series, with the final stop set to take place next weekend in Los
Angeles before the Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge caps
the series in Baltimore the weekend of June 5-7.
