Chase Brice earned a spot in the Finals of the Rivals Quarterback
Challenge in Baltimore.
JOHNS CREEK, GA. -- The Rivals Quarterback Challenge
Presented by Under Armour was held at Northview High School on
Sunday, and 2017 Loganville (Ga.) Grayson High School quarterback Chase Brice
beat out more than 80 of the East Coast's best signal callers to win the event.
Sunday's participants came from as far north as New Jersey and as far south as
Miami.
The victory earned Brice an all-expenses paid trip to Baltimore for the Finals of the
Rivals Quarterback Challenge, an event that takes place
during the weekend of the
Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge in June.
Brice, who is still waiting for his first scholarship offer, said he is in frequent contact with
coaches from
The 6-foot-2, 195-pound prospect hopes to parlay Sunday's
win, and potentially another strong performance in Baltimore, into numerous
scholarship offers.
"I think this is a big opportunity for me to get my recruiting to the next
level," Brice said. "This is such a great event to showcase my
talents."
The Rivals Quarterback Challenge is a part of
the Rivals Camp Series Presented by Under Armour and
includes an accuracy competition and other evaluations that are tracked by
analysts using a unique points system, an explanation of which can be found
here (PDF).
Out of the entire field of Sunday's competition, seven finalists emerged and
advanced to the final round. Brice was the ultimate winner with 40 points, followed by
Justin Berry (34 points), Jake Allen (34), Kato Nelson (33), Stephen Calvert (29), Kurt Rawlings (27) and
Matthew Downing (24).
Those in attendance received a surprise visit from NFL quarterback Jason
Campbell, a 10-year veteran whose career began in 2005 with the Washington Redskins.
He's currently a free agent after spending last season with the Cincinnati
Bengals.
Campbell, who signed with Auburn in 2000 out of Taylorsville (Miss.), heard about Sunday's
Challenge and decided to drop by.
"As a professional quarterback you always like to see guys who are in high
school," Campbell said. "They may think they've got it, but they don't
understand there's still a long ways to go. But at events like this there is a
competitive side and it's fun to come out and watch. I just enjoy it and it's
probably something I want to get involved with once I move on from my career."
Campbell believes that competing in the Rivals Quarterback Challenge will help prospects succeed.
"If you're in your small circle or a small town, the only competition you have
is there," he said. "But if you step out to events like this where it's more
challenging and you get the chance to meet other quarterbacks from across the
nation and you're all in one spot, now you get to test your abilities against
some of the best.
"If you want to be the best, that's what you have to do. You can't stay in your
comfort zone. You have to challenge yourself. That will create more
opportunities."
