Ponies pick up another pledge

Phil Bennett knows to help rebuild the SMU football program he’s going to have to keep some of the top players in the Metroplex at home. And with his third known commitment for the Class of 2003, he’s doing just that.
The Ponies have picked up a commitment from 6-foot-1, 260-pound defensive tackle Desmond Jones of Dallas Carter.

“I did it last week,” Carter said. “They offered me a scholarship about two weeks ago, and I went over there to check it out. It’s a great environment and they have great coaches. They’re going to make that program great, and I wanted to be a part of that.”
Jones, who is ranked as a two-star player, plays on the outside at defensive end for Carter but will make the move inside for the Ponies.
“I’m smaller than some of the other inside offensive linemen and that allows me to get under them and get to the quarterback,” he said. “I’m also faster than them.”
Jones said he was also getting interest from teams like Iowa State, TCU and Baylor but when SMU offered, he jumped on it.
“It’s a good thing over there,” he said. “Coach (Oscar) Giles got me really excited about all of the positive things that are going on there. He’s a great guy.”
